Ever see a guy and say to yourself, "Hey...I'd like to take him home to meet the parents—now where's my furry handcuffs?" No—me neither...but if all handcuffed holiday hostages came like the one in this fun ABC Family flick, I might have second thoughts...er...or not.
Melissa Joan Hart's latest endeavor, Holiday in Handcuffs , is about much more than kidnapping a random good-looking fellow and dragging him to ma's for the holidays however. It is actually humorous, endearing and full of quirky fun.
Hart talks about her thoughts after viewing it for the first time. "I was really impressed and proud of the movie. I thought it would be hilariously funny, but I didn"t expect it to be as sweet as it is. My harshest critic is my 14 year-old sis who said it was 'up there with Elf' as her fave Christmas movie. That"s huge for me!"
We talked more to Hart about the holiday season, her role in Holiday in Handcuffs, and her experiences and traditions during the Christmas season.
What did you identify with the most in your character?
I understand her quarter-life crisis, which I think is very
current today. She is stuck between what she wants and what her parents want
her to do. These days, I see so many women around age 30 who are trying to
figure out where they are supposed to be in life now. "Should I be married,
have 3 kids, be a CEO?" It’s very confusing with the modern pressure that
has been put on women to do it all!
In the film, your character had
to write down her Christmas wishes. What are your Christmas wishes?
I hope that I can cook an impressive meal for all 16 of our
family that will come over for dinner. I hope the look on my son’s face when he
sees all the gifts will stay in my memory forever, and pray that my unborn child will come into this
world and be just as healthy and smart as his/her big brother.
How does your character's
Christmas time compare to what you do during the holiday season?
Pretty similar! We both feel a lot of pressure to impress
our families. But my family actually picks gifts that the recipient usually
enjoys and wants. We don’t lock ourselves in a cabin with no contact to the
outside world, but we do enjoy our time together and turn our phones off while
we are together for the day.
What was it like portraying a
potential kidnapper? Do you ever see yourself having a "break"
quite like this one - what do you think might ensue if you do have a
"break"?
I could never hold a gun on anyone. It was even difficult to
do in a movie, but I have snapped here and there before. I usually try not to
upset anyone in the process of me losing it.
Not
that you would have a holiday breakdown, but do you feel a lot of pressure
during the holidays?
I actually love the pressure of picking the
perfect gift for each person, throwing parties, making cookies for our cookie
exchange and sending out the best card I can find. I am a big planner so the
more I have to do, the more I get done.
What is your favorite holiday
tradition?
I love eating my grandma’s famous French Silk Pie ‘til I am
sick. But now, with Mason, I am looking forward to starting all kinds of new
traditions with my growing family.
Do
you have any personal family holiday experiences that were strange or funny in
their own way?
My family always had a great relationship with Santa. Every
year we would get a photo of him or a bag of gifts dropped on our front porch,
or see him run through the yard. As a kid, it was great to have that thrill and
now, as an adult, it is wonderful to recreate it for our son!
One of the many traditions we had and still enjoy is after
the Thanksgiving day parade, when Santa makes his appearance, we all yell out as
loud as possible at Santa all the things we want for Christmas. My husband
thought we were all very strange the first time he witnessed this phenomenon.
For fans wondering what you will be up to next, what will you be up to next?
I am in the process of trying to get a film off the ground
called Tiny Dancer that I will be directing hopefully next year. It is a
wonderful movie about a prima ballerinas struggle between motherhood and her
career.
Holiday in Handcuffs premeires on ABC Family channel Sunday, December 9th at 8 p.m. ET.
I LOVED it. watched it three times in one night...... when will it come to dvd? i cant wait it needs to be released in australia SOOOOOOONNNN does anyone know where i could watch it online i missed it but really wanted to see it I absolutely love this move, everytime it was scheduled to be on i would make my family go to another part of the house so i could watch it in peace and quiet!! Awesome movie, can't wait 'til it comes out on dvd, hopefully!! I saw it with my kids, I was disappointed. I would not call it a "family" movie. Some of the things were distasteful. Kinky S&M suggestions. Mom freaks out because she is out of "extra virgin" olive oil. Brother no longer is with his girlfriend, but has hooked up with a guy. Not appropriate family entertainment. It was really neat to see the little couple in this movie discover what they really wanted in life early - before they brought children into the equation. Today's young women seem to think being a Bridezilla is OK, and their men seem to allow their women to behave this way. Kudos! To the couple who stood up for themselves and took charge of their health and happiness thru honesty with themselves FIRST. I watched this last night it was so cute. Great interview!
