Rated: R
What would you get if you took a well aged Dennis Leary, added several heaping shots of Dennis Miller, along with a generous twist of Richard Pryor, then dumped all of the contents into a blender? Why...you'd get the Dave Attell drink! The alcoholic beverage would be a fitting metaphor for this comedian. Actor/comedian/writer Dave Attell has a DVD out entitled, Dave Attell Captain Miserable, in which he shocks his audience right from their being by showing just how skilled he is at being crude, cynical, smart and sarcastic. His topics are just the sort of taboo issues that all decent corporate businesses warn their employees about: sex, politics, and religion. No group is spared. He happily pours his comedic cynicism over everyone, leaving quite a bitter after-taste in his audience's mouth...and they love him for it. Even though he's not shy about showing off his extensive vocabulary, and I don't just mean all the curse words he uses in his act, he still manages to gear his controversial commentary for the general college and adult audience. His favorite thing is making fun of those running the government, mainly the guy in charge. I won't mention any names, but here's a hint: think very short tree. He doesn't have a favorite side on any issues either. He must be a Libra, because he bashes proponents and opponents alike with equally disturbing veracity. Subjects such as abortion, tsunamis, pedophilia, pornography, religious practices, and the Iraqi war are just some of the issues he demolishes, all in jest, of course. One subject held a soft spot for him. Based on how he embellished his stories about the various experiences that he was able to remember, one could tell that this specific topic was near and dear to his hear—liquors and getting drunk on them. He even shared his ideas about a commercial that he felt would be suitable for Jagermeister. His sick, demented sense of humor would fit right in with the writers of such shows as the Simpsons, Family Guy, or American Dad. The title of his DVD didn't really fit how he appeared on stage or how he delivered his routine. He didn't seem miserable, just painfully honest and not willing to spare anyone of the shocking details. Needless to say, his act is not for the squeamish, overly sensitive or uneducated. If you like what you see on this DVD and have an unquenchable thirst for more, you can always get your fill on the Comedy Central series Insomniac with Dave Attell. Personally, I'd prefer a nice, hot cup of cocoa with those dehydrated Swiss Miss marshmallows. For those of you who enjoy this kind of kick-in-the-you-know-where drink, I've got one word for you--Jager. |
