Super Deluxe: Fresh Like Hot Pockets Print E-mail

You'll laugh, you'll cry - others will laugh at you. This is the launch of something big. Huge. Super. Deluxe. The invitation header echoed my wonderings: "What the hell is Super Deluxe?”

Super Deluxe, it turns out, is a website. But not just any 'ol website my friends. This website is all about bringing the funny. Seriously. It’s a place on the web where the world’s best comedic talent can get together and showcase their work for you in the form of top quality comedy videos. Think YouTube meets Myspace meets Blogger, only unlike those sites, Super Deluxe specializes specifically in comedy. {mosgoogle right}

This means that you don’t have to wade through a bog of unfunny tripe just to get to the good stuff because the folks behind Super Deluxe make it their business to place it at your fingertips for the licking. Savor that for a moment. Mmm…it’s good.

How do they do that you ask? By bringing you original content made specifically for the network. Short films. Sketches. Episodic series. The artists create content themselves, showcasing it in their own area of the site (sort of like a MySpace page) containing their personal blog.

Users have the opportunity to promote themselves and advertise upcoming projects and appearances. It’s a win win for them. Super Deluxe provides the artist with a platform for exposure through feedback and promotion all the while giving YOU, the viewer (me, us, them…who?) access to the artists themselves as well as the ability to bring your own funny.

Do you think you can stack up to their amazing line-up of talent—artists like Brad Neely who showcased his irreverently hilarious animated series The Professor Brothers. Ever wonder why Sodom and Gomorra went down in flames? Why the angels were totally sexy? Just how in the hell Lot’s wife got turned into a pillar of salt? Ask one of the Professor Brothers and I’m sure they can put a ridiculous spin on it for you. Brad Neely was the one responsible for the now infamous unauthorized spoof of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone entitled Wizard People, Dear Reader, the comic series Creased Comics and the popular YouTube video George Washington.

Both his series on the site (the other being I Am Baby Cakes) are sharp witted and outlandish. The kind of funny that coaxes tears out of your eyes. You know, where you stop breathing for a split second? Yeah, that kind of funny.

Speaking of funny, let’s talk about another featured artist getting his Super Deluxe on: Eugene Mirman. Having been described by Esquire Magazine as “Equal parts Andy Kaufman and Andy Warhol,” Mirman strikes as the embodiment of unassuming strangeness. His funny is broadly eccentric. To the point that you might not get some of it, but you know deep down inside your quiet place that you should. If Comedy Central’s Premium Blend and Adult Swim’s Aquateen Hunger Force (number one in the hood, G) mean anything to you, then he is the one to watch.

Because of his many endeavors in television and the internet, he can describe himself merely as “mildly famous,” and take pride in the fact that he is the second Eugene you will find in your Google search results. But he holds court in his small rectangle of internet infamy with his involvement on the Super Deluxe website. Here, he hosts his own ‘internet talk show’ called Space Talk From Dimension Eugene. In it, he offers everything from gloves manufactured by a corporation called Asshole that make you forget to use the restroom, to blue poetry-writing aliens from Boston. Anything he can think of, it seems, goes into this oddly imagined dimension.

In conjunction with his take on the future, Mirman offers you his advice on dating, the trade secret of his involvement with the government as an ass-kicking spy, and (most importantly) the shameless whoring of his talents to big-up Super Deluxe via his seasoned potty mouth and ‘blank stare’ Russian face. He brings the funny like a punch in the gut. It hurts.

Also making an appearance is Devin Flynn. As the colorful director of animated shorts for popular MTV 2 series Wonder Showzen, his piece was the most bizarrely confusing bit of comedy genius in the room. It’s crudely drawn animation makes you think you’re all kinds of high as it pops out at you in neon colors. Things like a room’s components talking to each other, the food chain manifesting itself before your eyes in a bird eat rodent, snake eat bird and so on kind of world and a Rasta’s head putting a cop in his pipe and literally smoking him….I could go on but my attempt to put into words the mind trip you go on in less than two minutes time during this wildly imagined short is futile.

Last, but certainly not least, it’s Chelsea Peretti. She’s pretty, confident and brash. Peretti, the CA native stand-up comic who writes for Playgirl, The Village Voice and The Huffington Post, wants you to be her friend. You will won’t you? I think so. Especially after you sit through her motivated jaunt through Manhattan in search of bosom buddies on her uncomfortably funny Making Friends with Chelsea Peretti.

It’s the classic point and shoot method of comedy. Asking real peeps questions and then sticking the mic in their faces just waiting for them to make a you-know-what out of themselves. This video is all about listening to stories about childhood sandwiches, engaging in man poaching and bribery, stealing quiet friend time on a street bench with strangers, and taking noogies from some old dude who will surely pave the road to a bosom buddy for Chelsea..so long as they know she can’t do Wednesdays.

Super Deluxe also boasts contributions from well known talent such as Richard Belzer (Law and Order) and Dave Foley (Kids in the Hall). All this and more is what you can find on the site. And luckily for you they decided you can show them up by creating your own video series, sketch comedies, or animated shorts. Upload them onto the site yourself.

What differentiates Super Deluxe from its predecessors is concentration on purely comedic content and creativity. In other words, they want your baby, not your stepchild. Don’t hand off some home video of your friends doing stupid things just for attention. According to them “Any idiot can set up a video camera, press "Record" and tape their friend getting hit in the balls with a golf club. But it takes a special kind of idiot to create quality, funny videos like the ones featured here.”

The site is colorful, engaging, and provides hours of entertainment for those of you who have the kind of time on your hands to devote to perusing the world wide web in search of "the funny". Super Deluxe brings it, so check them out at http://www.superdeluxe.com/.
