News Briefs - General

golden_globe.jpgThe Hollywood Foreign Press Association just announced the nominees for the 2008 Golden Globe Awards.

One of our favorites, Atonement, took away quite a few nods, including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Actress for Keira Knightley, Best Actor for James McAvoy, Supporting Actress for Saoirse Ronan, Best Director for Joe Wright , Best Screenplay for Christopher Hampton, and finally Best Original Score for Dario Marianelli.

I think it's safe to say, the movie is well liked in the entertainment community.

So, who do we think will win? Well, it isn't so much who we think will win, but who we want to win right?

The Best Motion Picture category houses some pretty hefty productions. No Country for Old Men, Atonement, Michael Clayton, There Will be Blood, to name a few. All wonderful films, but only one can walk away with the Globe in hand. I am going to go with Atonement as my favorite for this category. The overall ensemble is pefectly balanced.

The Best Actress category is also full of tremendous talent, Knightley, Blanchett, Jolie, Foster, Christie. I have to go with Jolie on this one though. Her performance in A Mighty Heart was chilling.

The Best Actor group comes up with McAvoy, Clooney, Day-Lewis, Mortensen and Washington. This is even tougher—all of these guys are magnificent...but only one can win. I am going to nod in McAvoy's direction...all of his performances in recent productions have been spectacular and he really shines through in this movie.

ACED's favorites for Best Motion Picture in the Comedy/Musical genre goes to Juno, followed by Amy Adams for Best Actress in Enchanted and Johnny Depp for Best Actor in Sweeny Todd.

Best Animated Film? Has to be Ratatouille!

Best Foreign Language Film has a few good flicks in the mix, including The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Lust, Caution and Persepolis. Depending on my mood this could change, but I am thinking The Diving Bell and the Butterfly has it.

Supporting Actress and Actor in a Motion Picture are up next, and with some great talents lined up as well. For Supporting Actress, Saoirse Ronan gets my vote, and for Actor—Javier Bardem. Both are crucial in the roles they portrayed, and both were exceptional in their execution of character.

Best Director is a tie, the Coen brothers for No Country for Old Men....Joe Wright for Atonement...I am going to have to go with Joe Wright for Atonement. Outstanding work!

As we all know, if the screenplay for a film sucks, most often than not, so does the movie. The category for Best Screenplay is, in my opinion, one of the most important categories. There are a ton a talented writers—Diablo Cody for Juno, the Coen brothers for No Country for Old Men, Christopher Hampton for Atonement...again, I have to give a nod to Atonement. Hampton spun out a very well written tale of woe and beauty.

Skipping down to the television realm, there are quite a few great shows nominated in the Drama genre: House, Damages, Grey's Anatomy... In all honesty, the one that stands out for me the most has to be House. It's hands down one of the best dramatic shows on television today.

Actors and Actresses in television Drama... these are easy to figure out—Glenn Close for Damages (although Kyra Sedgwick runs a very close second) and Hugh Laurie for House (no one else on that list can touch him).

There are many other categories, including the comedic television series category featuring shows like Extras, and the actors and actresses that star and support these productions.

The Mini-Series/Motion Picture Made for Television genre of categories marks the end of the list (I know...I didn't talk about movie scores or soundtracks...but I never remember them once I leave the theater), with a bunch of talented performers and entertaining shows in the running.

If you'd like to see the full list of nominees and make your own guesses about who you think will win, read further for a list of the 2008 Nominees for the Golden Globe Awards.

I agree with almost all of your choices, except I like Cate Blanchett better for the actress category.
