One Tree Hill returns for its fifth season tomorrow, January 8th at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.
Season four ended as the young
characters graduated high school and season five begins post-college,
four years later. Some of the characters have found success while
others have failed.
Many things have changed. With the help of his editor Lindsey (Michaela McManus), Lucas published
his first novel "An Unkindness of Ravens", and now is working on his second.
Along with Skills (Antwon Tanner), Lucas also coaches his former high
school basketball team, vowing to take the team to another
championship. He is not lonely for love either...
When Peyton (Hilarie Burton) graduated from high school, she loved
two things: Lucas and music. She decided to leave Tree Hill for an internship at
a record company in Los Angeles, but life isn't always kind when you set out to change the universe one band or song at a time. After spending some time away from home and friends, Peyton begins to feel a little homesick, loosing her battle with the corporate world.
Her best friend Brooke (Sophia Bush), was chasing her dream of becoming
a top fashion designer with her clothing line "Clothes over Bros". Four
years later, Brooke has found some success. She is famous, has plenty of money, on her way to Milan and whipped into submission by her own employed business tyrant, void of any friends or meaningful relationships.
Similarly, Nathan (James Lafferty) and Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti)
have also endured the highs and lows of Nathan's career path, but have
balanced this journey with the joys of parenthood as they raise their
young son, James (Jackson Brundage). Haley is settling into a teaching job and Nathan is now dealing with a new pair of demons that could cause major problems for him and his family if he doesn't snap out of this dark spiral.
Even Mouth (Lee Norris) continues to chase a career in broadcasting but is
finding the on-air business to be cut-throat and difficult. It seems he is having a little difficulty just getting his tape together...perhaps he should spend less time squirting water guns at his roommates...
Overall, the opening episode for season five illustrates the positive and the negative behind survival in the big, bad world. Some of the positives seem almost too good to be true, but then they are countered by equally unfortunate parallels that keep a good balance without being too far fetched.
