Yes, this film does contain all of the same cozy cliches found in movies like Top Gun or An Officer and a Gentleman, but it also harbors its own charm.
This production is all about choices: Who gets saved first and who dies—do I rent or buy this DVD... There is no doubt that many people will love this film, especially if they enjoyed its predecessors that were made from the same stitching.
In The Guardian, legendary Rescue Swimmer, Ben Randall (Kevin Costner), loses his crew in a fatal crash. This accident seriously effects him, and as a result he is sent to teach at “A” School, an elite training program for Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers.
An interesting thing to note here is the fact that all of the cast members actually went through a mini "A" School, led by the Coast Guard’s Robert Watson, John Hall and Butch Flyth. The abbreviated training school was probably hardest for Costner. “I’m 51 and these other guys in the movie are all in their 20s, so the training was a real labor of love for me. This film taxed all my physical abilities,” he said.
Physical challenges aside, the character Randall continues to deal with the loss of his crew members while at school. He throws himself into teaching. Randall encounters a young, cocky swim champ, Jake Fischer (Ashton Kutcher), who is driven to be the best. During training, Randall helps mold Jake’s character, combining his raw talent with the heart and dedication required of a Rescue Swimmer.
Jake follows Randall to Kodiak, Alaska, after graduation. During his first solo rescue, Jake learns the true meaning of heroism and sacrifice. Randall has to overcome his trauma and "Fish" has to learn how to choose.
Kutcher is no Tom Cruise or Richard Gere, and when he's in his 50s he'll still be Punked, but this is his best effort since the Butterfly Effect. Costner displays his consistently seasoned talent on screen—as if.
The Guardian may not be anything very new, but it will still touch your heart, entertain your eyes and promises not to bore you to death. If you are going to choose—choose to put this movie on your shelf.
