One of the better love stories of recent times, Definitely,
Maybe tugs at the heartstrings and delivers a solid, enjoyable story. It"s a great date film. I especially liked Brooks" direction of the
complicated romance.
On the verge of divorce, Will (Reynolds) gets confronted by
his young daughter Maya (Breslin) about the sex education she has been learning
in school. Being a righteous dad, he
chooses to tell her the story of how he met her mother and how they fell in
love, as an alternative. But the affair
was very complicated, so he uses fictional characters and makes it a guessing
game in hopes that she will understand the extenuating circumstances around the
courtship.
He pieces three love stories
together involving his college sweetheart Emily (Banks), April (Fisher) a
campaign worker and Summer (Weisz), a writer for a New York magazine. When Maya starts to
figure out which girl his dad really liked the best, Will tries to put a halt
to his bedtime story.
I loved the
acting of Breslin, she has a natural talent that is rare in
young actors these days. Her portrayal of innocent,
inquisitive Maya who takes on the challenge of trying to put love back into her
father, is brilliant and a joy to watch.
Reynolds pleasantly surprised me, although the ever-famous jester in Waiting,
the sad sack role here proves to be his best.
The best performance, however, goes to Isla Fisher as the creatively
endearing April who does her best to catch the eye of Will. Her cunning remarks are well delivered,
bringing excitement to the trio of romances.
Writer/director
Brooks does a great job mixing the love stories together and keeping the puzzle
interesting, yet not difficult to understand.
Tying in Clinton’s
political campaign was a good idea considering his wife is running for the same
office. At first I was taken aback by
the political overtones, but Brooks conquers that challenge with some very
smart innuendos.
The
studio’s decision for release on Valentine's Day is a good one. It’s a great time to take your favorite girl
to dinner and a film that should bring some laughs and stir a spark of
romance.
FINAL
ANALYSIS: Definitely, Maybe is a
very good love story that should warm the coldest of hearts.
