This film is based on a true story. The main character, Christopher Johnson McCandless (Hirsch), travels west beginning in 1990 after graduating college at Emory, leaving his life behind without telling a soul. He then decides to head north to Alaska, continuing his two-year experience to complete a "spiritual revolution".
The film is separated by chapters of Chris' life when he steps away from mainstream society and Into the Wild. Setting fire to the small amount of money in his pocket, after having given charity $24,000 of his college fund that would have otherwise taken him through Harvard Law School, Chris embarks on a journey to shed away the non-necessities that bog people down, finding his true self. The first thing he does is become reborn; changing his name to Alexander Supertramp, born in 1990. Alex goes through the country, meeting new people, learning new things, and experiences life in its simplistic wonder. There is beauty and intelligence in simplicity and Alex is able to find it, take hold of it, and cherish it.The 2-Disc Collector's Edition includes Special Features on the second disc; these include:
Critique: The journey experienced with Into the Wild is so profound, that I am drawn to watch this movie countless times, knowing that I will continually pick up on minute nuances that take many viewings to experience in full. The acting, cinematography...everything that encompasses Into the Wild is put together with such perfection, making the final product exhilarating. Featurette, The Story, the Characters, explains how the film came to be - what happened to the real Chris McCandless, the story Into the Wild, and how that book sparked the imagination of Sean Penn, who wrote the screenplay and directed the film. The cast and crew talk about how they became part of this project and what doing this film meant to them. This feature is a definite must-see after watching the movie because there is more appreciation of this new and true knowledge rather than obtaining it before watching the actual film. Featurette, The Experience, shows each location Chris traveled to on his journey west, and north, to Alaska. Sean Penn speaks about going to each spot that Chris went to, helping to create this realness, revealing that making and duplicating these places on sets in L.A. would have been impossible. Emile Hirsch also talks about traveling to over thirty locations to make this film, and all the experiences he had while there. Everyone gets moments in their life where they wish to leave the vanities, materialistic needs, and society behind...just to travel the country, or the world, on a quest to find themselves. Chris McCandless aka Alex Supertramp, goes on this journey solo to do exactly that, and I believe he succeeded. If only we could all be so lucky.
