Universal Studios recently opened the new Wizarding World of Harry Poter.   I was one of the lucky few to be at the opening ceremony, where the cast came to “drop the curtain” on the amazing magical theme park dedicated to all the HP fans.

Take a bucketful of Saturday Night Live alumni, add director Bill Dugan who has a long list of comedies, and throw in a script that allows its cast to show their stuff, and you have a recipe for laughter.  That’s what Grown Ups delivers, and I don’t know a better way this hot summer to chill out at the movies.

If it’s a lot of intense excitement with comedic relief that you are looking for, then Knight and Day will do the trick.  The high-powered spy thriller takes you up and down and then spins you around. It’s a cool roller coaster ride.  And there’s a great deal of nonsense, absurdities and other impossible mayhem, and that’s what makes the film fun to watch.

Comic books have infiltrated the summer box-office with films like Iron Man 2, Kick-Ass, The Losers, and now the supernatural thriller Jonah Hex.  While Iron Man and Kick-Ass have been the most successful getting an audience thus far, Jonah Hex may cause a strong surge in movie attendance due to its mystical content, PG-13 rating, and school being out for the summer.

Here is a cute slice-of-life film that, although entertains, is riddled with plot tripe and miscasts.  It also lives up to its name, Please Give, because that’s what you will be doing at the theater box-office.  This Indie could use a rewrite or some key role cast changes.

Driving a kick to the heart of the teen and pre-teen market, The Karate Kid packs a big punch.  Slick choreography, excellent cinematography and good acting are at the forefront of this remake featuring Jaden Smith in the lead, accompanied with an excellent performance by Jackie Chan.  The message the film makes is powerful and targets all ages.

Historical, romantic and enlightening, the true story of Princess Kaiulani inspires while it entertains.  Marc Forby, who writes and first-time directs this wonderful period piece, provides a canvas on which he paints a fight for honor, dignity and survival.  If you enjoy 19th century romance like Room With a View or Howard’s End, or historical period pieces such as The Dutchess, you should enjoy Princess Kaiulani.

What would you expect from the director of Smokin’ Aces? Another big action thriller -- and director Joe Carnahan comes through.  The fun ride starts with action and ends with a big bang. The comedic timing, wild stunts, great CGI/special effects and wacko storyline make The A-Team a big winner.  If you are an action junkie, lover of the television series or just wanting to escape from a hectic day, then this barn-burner should do...
