Fun for the little ladies and the rest of the family, The Pirate Fairy comes to Blu-ray in a fashionable combo pack that includes the DVD and Digital HD. Following up on the success of Secret of the Wings, this wondrous adventure puts the fairies in overdrive. The frivolity with the little darlings continues as we follow one of Tinker Bell’s friends on a quest to find her fate and become accepted. It’s a different take on how Peter Pan’s nemesis Captain Hook may have made it to Never Land.
The story centers on Zarina (voice of Christina Hendricks) a member of the dust-keepers who help bag and distribute the fairy dust to their fellow pixies. The Dust allows fairies to fly. She’s an industrious young lady and is very curious about what more the special blue pixie dust can do to make things even better for Pixie Hollow. She takes some blue dust home with her.
A budding chemist, it’s not long before she makes orange pixie dust and finds it can be used to control light even though she’s not a light fairy. Getting overly excited with her new creation she trips and drops pink pixie dust that she made on the ground. In a matter of minutes a huge vine grows nearly destroying the dust depot. Her boss Gary doesn’t appreciate her dabbling in something as precious of the blue pixie dust so he decides to get her reassigned to another job. Upset Zarina leaves the village deciding to go out on her own.
A year later Zarina returns to Pixie Hollow during the Four Season’s Festival. She’s been living with pirates and returns to get some blue pixie dust. Director Peggy Holmes keeps the film exciting and interesting with plot points that follow Zarina’s quest to take all the blue dust and bring it to the pirates. Except for their leader James (Tom Hiddleston), she makes her pirates funny and clumsy.
She introduces another adventure that Disney had made way back when, Peter Pan. It’s the beginning of Captain Hook and his merry crew, but told in a way that “could have been”. Each of the characters on the pirate ship is creatively developed and begin to be identified from croc and the clock to Captain and his hook. The only missing part is getting to Never Land, but even that almost happens in this adventure.
The pixies and their voices starring in the film are Tinker Bell (Mae Whitman), Zarina (Christina Hendricks), Silvermist (Lucy Liu), Iridessa (Raven-Symone), Resetta (Megan Hilty), Vidia (Pamela Adlon) and Fawn (Angela Bartys). Songs featured in the film are “Who I Am” and “Weightless” sung by Natasha Bedingfield, and “The Frigate That Flies” by the chorus of voice pirate actors.
So, what is pixie dust? For those of us that are not aware, it’s the life blood of the fairy and allows her to fly. It also gives fairies their abilities, like flying fast, creating gardens, and with Tinker Bell, able to fix and build things. Have I left anything out?
The Blu-ray has bonus features that the kids will like and want to enjoy so make sure to show them after the movie.

The video quality is extremely good with its 16×9 HD Widescreen 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio that fills the whole TV screen. The colors are vibrant and bring the fairies to life with glowing wings and bright outfits. The water looks real and the pixie dust glows as it’s spread by the wings of the fairies.
The sound quality is clear and clean with the dialogue and soundtrack nicely presented. The DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 (Blu-ray) and Dolby Digital 5.1 (DVD) are equally good. The songs are musical theater quality and very enjoyable on both DVD and Blu-ray.
