“Quarry” a Gut-wrenching Series of Murder and Mayhem

Wow! comes to mind after watching Showtime’s Quarry on DVD. When you sit to watch the first episode it’s like a good book, you can’t put it down, or in this case you can’t turn it off. It had me hooked with its exciting characters, compelling story, and surprising twists. It’s not your ordinary crime drama, even though you may have seen comparable on cable TV, this one gets as gritty as they come. Read more

“John Wick: Chapter 2” a Killer of a Thriller

If you are familiar with the original movie two years ago, John Wick: Chapter 2 serves up a heaping helping of violence this time around as well. The action packed hitman film moves from New York to Rome, Italy where violence explodes Italian style. Although you need not have seen the first film, it wouldn’t hurt to relive it a bit on video. Especially if you may be hesitant about seeing a second passionate ode to carnage. Read more

“Dead West” Hunting for Lost Lust

If you are looking for a really depraved serial killer film, then look no further than Dead West. The movie, now on DVD, takes you on a journey with a lot of dead bodies left behind. Nicely made, the film shows a little pity by using off screen sound to confirm the killings. I’m not saying this to make the film acceptable for the squeamish, but Dead West does avoid a lot of blood gushing horror. Oh, this is not a cowboy movie. Read more

“Patriot’s Day” a Must See Docudrama

An edge of your seat thriller, the true story Patriot’s Day left me breathless. The movie takes you through the steps following the heinous and senseless bombing at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. Filmed with of tight hand, director Peter Berg grabs you by the collar and glues you to the screen for two plus hours of the incredible action packed reenactment. The planned cowardice act is a wake-up call for all adults and students that need to be alert that America is vulnerable to terrorism. Read more

“Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”, a Military Crime Thriller

jack-reacher-poster

Where I was not too fond of the first Jack Reacher film that came out in 2012, the sequel “Never Go Back” delivers much more energy. The action sequences are quite good even though they are not on par with Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible series. In addition the storyline has pangs of déjà vu from other action films within the past years. All that said, if you are a big fan of Cruise or just want to escape to a movie where you can forget a bad day, then this military crime thriller should do the trick. Read more

“The Accountant”, Killing by the Numbers

The most electrifying and suspense-filled film this year, The Accountant has opened nationwide and it’s a thriller. From opening act to the closing credits it keeps you glued to your seat waiting for the exciting scene. Under the keen direction of Gavin O’Connor who brought Miracle and Warrior to the screen, the cast makes The Accountant a winner. If you thought that Ben Affleck was good in movies like Gone Girl, Argo or The Town, witness the actor at his level best. Read more

“Nerve”, It’s a Game You Dare Not Play

NERVE 2 poster

Targeted at teens the movie Nerve sets up a very dangerous game that involves taking huge chances and cheating death. The film has adequate acting and able direction, but the storyline does have elements of the impossible. While it’s just a movie to create thrills and suspense, it’s kind of fun to watch, especially the risky scenes involving the dares. Read more

“The Nice Guys”, It’s a Doozy

NICE GUYS poster

The madcap adventure The Nice Guys opens this weekend and it’s a doozy. The cast makes the film work with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in the leads and a feisty 13-year-old Angourie Rice backing them up. It’s a lot of fun with this throwback to 1979 that has the feel of a Chinatown, but with a lot of comedy. Actually more like Lethal Weapon, because the writer and director Shane Black scripted that series featuring two buddy cops getting into the same kind of awkward and dangerous situations. Read more

A twisty twisted tale of crime and punishment Criminal Activities will keep you guessing till the final turn of events. Cop Car, an Incredibly Twisted Tale

COP CAR boxart

An exciting little film with a lot of drama from an enjoyable cast Cop Car stands toe to toe with the outstanding Indies released this year. At first I thought that it was another episode of “Fargo” with that kind of sick humor, but on its own the movie plays with surprising spirit that sometimes overshadows the hit TV show. Nicely written and excellent direction, if you like movies that get more twisted as they play out, then Cop Car’s for you. Now on Blu-ray and DVD for home viewing. Read more

Black Mass a Disturbing True Story

BLACK MASS poster

A very violent and disturbing true story Black Mass takes you into the world of one of Boston’s infamous criminals James “Whitey” Bulger. Played out superbly by Johnny Depp as Bulger and for his performance alone this film should not be missed. Well-acted by a superior support cast and directed by Scott Cooper the movie should be considered for the short list of Oscar contenders. While the story gets very brutal and alarming, there’s no other way to tell it. Read more

Checkmate, Twisting Fate

CHECKMATE boxart 1

Robbing a bank can be a disaster for everyone concerned and that’s what the film Checkmate’s story really has to say. Not well-acted and loosely directed, the story actually needs explaining if you want to know what the script writer intended. For entertainment purposes it’s easier to just go with the film as a robbery gone badly. Now on DVD it may be more of a Redbox rental than something you want to own.

Get the Man Cave Ready for 7 Minutes

7 MINUTES boxart

A comedy of errors but with a serious tone the film 7 Minutes comes to Blu-ray and DVD with a story that may seem a bit familiar, yet fun to watch. The low budget movie has a recognizable cast good uses of their fine talent within the loosely scripted storyline. If you like movies that get to the point, are action based and are not complicated, then invite your best buds over for a brewski or two and whoop it up with 7 Minutes. Read more

Marshland, Murders in the Swamp

MARSHLAND poster

One of the better foreign films I’ve seen this year Marshland (La isla minima) paints a very morbid picture of a serial killing. Well-acted the film grips you from the very beginning never letting you go till the credits roll. Although it may give you a feeling of déjà vu from the myriad of both screen and TV films that feature the same subject, this film puts a different twist on the sordid crime. If you are not tired of the worn out theme and would like to see what Spain has to offer, check out Marshland opening in theaters this weekend. The film took 10 statuettes at the Goya Awards (Spain’s Oscars). Read more
