“Bloodrunners” and “Slasher.com” now on home video

Two wicked films were released on DVD and Blu-ray this past week and if you are into vampires and serial killers than read on. The first one called Slasher.com is available on DVD only and most retailers should have enough copies to go around. The film has some very good acting, but the low budget does show through. The story has a few twists that you won’t see coming and the director opens a crack in the door of online dating before putting you in the forest for a visit to a backwoods family. Read more

“Table 19” the Misfits

Not the best comedy I’ve watched, the movie Table 19 unfortunately has a dull script that may have been a good idea, but just doesn’t work. The direction and the comedic scenes are not funny and the cast of well known actors are off kilter. Even the chemistry between the leads just isn’t there. It’s about a wedding reception gone wrong for a forlorn guest that just can’t come to grips with haven been rejected and that’s more drama than this comedy can handle. Read more

“Get Out” a Disturbing Fright Film

Disturbing and provocative the movie Get Out turns up the volume on suspense and terror. One of the better scary films in a long time, the movie challenges you from the very start as to the motives of a family gathering with a “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” impression that turns sour. If you like fright films like The Visit the this is your cup of tea. Read more

“Two Lovers and a Bear” a Doomed Romance that Sizzles

The modern day romance Two Lovers and a Bear plays out in the frigid Arctic Circle showing a period in their lives that gets out of control. Directed and written by Kim Nguyen who’s not a stranger to shooting in exotic settings, makes use of the snow laden wind swept mountains, valleys and mini towns that add a lot of visual text to the plot. He controls his cinematography keeping shots tight so his audience can feel the chemistry between his two main characters. The film has been released on DVD and Digital HD. Read more

“Havenhurst” a Twisted Tale of Evil

Turing out the very edgy and scary flick Havenhurst, director and writer Andrew C. Erin’s film should delight fans of the horror genre. Nicely written, expertly filmed and edited, there’s shock and fear coming at you when you least expect it. The story even has a message that there’s consequences for wrong decisions, abuse and over indulgence. That said, let’s get on with the movie review. Read more

“Dead West” Hunting for Lost Lust

If you are looking for a really depraved serial killer film, then look no further than Dead West. The movie, now on DVD, takes you on a journey with a lot of dead bodies left behind. Nicely made, the film shows a little pity by using off screen sound to confirm the killings. I’m not saying this to make the film acceptable for the squeamish, but Dead West does avoid a lot of blood gushing horror. Oh, this is not a cowboy movie. Read more

“Masterminds” A crazy comedy that’s a lot of fun

The screwball comedy Masterminds is based on the true story of the October 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery. Taken from a book by Jeff Diamant, the author interviewed the main character following his release from prison. The film, now on Blu-ray and DVD, even has back-up material of the robbery in a special feature called “The Imperfect Crime” included on both the Blu-ray disc and the DVD. Read more

“20th Century Women” an Oscar Contender

The coming of age movie 20th Century Women takes a look at life askew in the late 70’s for a single mother of a teenage boy. Nicely written the film features very good performances directed by a filmmaker that has lived the age of the boy during the time period. Unsuccessful for two Golden Globes, it’s now in the hands of those who may make 20th Century Women an Oscar winner. Read more

“Doobious Sources” A Stoner Movie That Gets Too High

Weird and silly the stoner film Doobious Sources has been released on Digital HD and VOD. The film makes a stab at being like the movie Up in Smoke, but without Cheech and Chong it just doesn’t make the grade. That said, if you like wacky movies that exaggerate situations for the comedy value, then this little gem is right for you. Read more

The sci-fi horror thriller Morgan turns brutal when a scientific experiment goes awry turning a lab into a blood fest. Now on Blu-ray and DVD in a combo pack that includes an HD download, the film has all the trappings for a nighttime couple’s shocker. You will not want to see this one alone, especially if you want to get the best out of your video choice. So turn the lights down, get the popcorn ready, maybe your favorite beverage and expect the unexpected. Read more

“Miss Sloane” a Current Topic with a Wicked Performance

miss-sloane-poster-1

Jessica Chastain gives brilliantly “wicked” performance in the film Miss Sloane as a lobbyist caught in the middle of a Senate Bill debate. She’s so good at projecting the persona of a strong woman that the ladies may even have cop an attitude following the show. Just kidding guys. Or maybe not. Right now she’s in my top picks for an Oscar. Read more

“I.T.” a Tech with a Sinister Plan

it-box-art

Very cringing and realistic, the movie I.T. has just been released on home video. The film has a lot of technology devices and they come into play a lot. I like the mystery and build up that gets very tense, even though it becomes a little predictable at times. Pierce Brosnan’s at the top of his game and support character James Frecheville keeps his character evil and chilling. Read more
