Valentines Are for Schmucks

Ahh, Valentine’s Day! One of the most romantic, consumer-driven holidays across the American calendar. February 14th may be all chocolates, teddy bears, and roses for some, but what about the 99%? The cynical singles that try to ignore the holiday as best they can, but remain stuck in the red and pink shadows of those madly in love?

I, for one, use the holiday as an excuse to drag one of my other, equally lonely friends along to dinner and a movie.  It gives us a chance to reignite the flame in our friendship, and refill the beer in our glasses.  I have compiled a list of great, funny, and friendship-based movies for you to enjoy with any or all of your friends. Let’s celebrate Single’s Awareness Day with the living diamonds of our life- our friends!

1)   Dinner for Schmucks

Steve Carell and Paul Rudd may appear as total opposites in this movie, but I guess there’s just something about taxidermy that has Carell hooked.

2)   Wizard of Oz

The classic tale about 4 outcasts coming together to create the ultimate, unstoppable crew. Unless Judy Garland & friends start skipping through a poppy field, of course.

3)   Dumb and Dumber

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels demonstrate one of the greatest perks about friendship- no matter how stupid you come off, they’re still stupid enough to love you.

4)   E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

Henry Thomas proves that friendship is strong enough to span across life forms.

5)   The Banger Sisters

We all lose ourselves to the daily grind some times and need a friend to remind us of life’s fun and craziness. Once Goldie Hawn gets Susan Sarandon off of her middle-class high horse and back into the party scene, they’re an invincible pair.

Enjoy your Single’s Awareness Day everyone!
