As season two of the popular television series Merlin comes to a close, fans can look forward to some insights to season two, as well as some hints to what is coming in season three, thanks to Angel Coulby, who plays Arthur's Guinevere.

 

Which episode was your favorite to film?

I think I enjoyed doing episode five the best. It was quite an adventure as we were taken out of Camelot for a while. There is a love triangle and I am quite happily involved in it. That is the episode where she is kidnapped by Lady Morgana.

There is that whole betrayal thing going on. Even though she cannot be with Arthur, she so easily forgets him and falls for another. What are your thoughts on that?

I think she loves both Arthur and Lancelot. The thing is, she has known Arthur for a very long time and he represents the mature man who represents everything good in Camelot. Lancelot on the other hand is very chivalrous and devil may care, and they have sort of a natural connection. In reality, she would probably end up with someone like Lancelot. She cares for them both very deeply.

How does this dynamic evolve in episode five?

In episode five you kind of see this relationship being taken notice of by Arthur, and I think you will see it develop, but not necessarily in a romantic sense because they are not allowed. You will see moments when there will be tension there because of their feelings for each other, and I think that will be quite something to watch out for. If the two ever meet again I think it will cause problems because Arthur can never really show his true feelings without giving away too much. I think there could be fireworks there.

What do you find to be the most endearing qualities of your character?

What I like about Gwen is her sense of truth. She always does the right thing even if it means it will hurt her. I think we see that with Arthur. She lets him be and do what he has to in order to be king rather than dealing with his affections for her. She just always does the right thing no matter what and that is her most admirable quality. I think she will make a great queen with that trait.

What goes into filming an entire season of Merlin?

It takes about eight to 10 months to film an entire season, with a lot of very long hours. We do a fair bit of traveling for the shoots as well. A typical day starts around six in the morning and you go in and have breakfast if you get time. Then you go and have your hair and makeup done, and then it is off to the set for about a 12-hour day. Even though the days are long, it is a good, fun job.

We get lots of time to hang out in between shots and we all get along really well. We have all been together for quite some time now and we all get on really well.

What about season three? What can fans look forward to in the series?

The nice thing about the writers of this show is that they continually move things and relationships on. So in season three, you are going to see much more grown up things happening, and it's much darker as well. Obviously it is a family show so we have to be careful about how it goes, but you will see a lot of that dark stuff as well because they went through that. There is a lot more banter between Merlin and Arthur, and a fair bit more magic.

Will Merlin ever get called out on his powers any time soon?

I think it will get to the point where it has to be revealed that Merlin has magical powers. I haven’t seen any of that yet, but I think when it does happen it will change the relationship dynamics. Gwen is very fond of Merlin having grown up around him, and although she has always been taught that magic is wrong, I think she will be very compassionate about it. I am not sure if Gwen will ever realize Morgana is magical, but I think she does realize that she is not the same type of person, and that there is no real relationship to be formed there.

Any characters you'd fancy portraying aside from your own?

I genuinely like all the characters for different reasons, but if I had to choose a favorite, and I wasn’t playing Gwen, I would have to say either Arthur or Morgana. I like Arthur because he gets to do loads of the fighting scenes, which I really enjoy, and Morgana gets to be magical and wear some beautiful clothes, and playing a witch would be very exciting.

Any parting revelations about the upcoming season three?

The main thing that develops in season three is her relationship with Arthur and how it test her and him.

And when you aren't on set, what might we find you doing in your spare time?

Personally I love any kind of music and play the guitar. I am starting to make my own clothes. I love to do anything that is creative, and be out and about in the sunshine.
