A New Dracula Story Awaits on Netflix

This is not your typical “sexy” vampire story. When we first meet this infamous blood-sucker, Dracula (Claes Bang) is quite old and feeble looking. It opens with a very old Dracula welcoming an English lawyer to his castle of never-ending tunnels, rooms and stairs; forming an endless stone labyrinth.

Dracula (Claes Bang)

The story follows Dracula from his time in Transylvania through his journey to England. Several points of vampire lore saw nods throughout the mini-series. Not sure there was any insight as to why things worked the way they did. So nothing new there.

There is the nun Van Helsing who displays an intrigue with the supernatural and a half-hearted belief in “God” at best. She is portrayed by actress Dolly Wells. Unfortunately, the character was somewhat underwhelming. There were as many good performances as there were bad performances in this Dracula.

Midway through the series the performances and story started to take better shape. You have to make it through episode one though. There is one trick Dracula can do that I have not seen yet in a vampire film or TV show, and he definitely puts it to good use. Bang does a great job portraying Dracula in all his crude, manipulative devilish glory.

While Dracula was produced by the same producers of the awesome British TV series, Sherlock, it was not so much my cuppa tea until we reached episode three. By then it started getting more interesting, but there were still quite a few things that didn’t make sense. All in all, I was not overly impressed with Dracula. Shame, I really wanted to like it.
