You’d never know it, but Apple‘s new smartwatch has a secret. Many people might not realize there is a certain feature right in front of them – a secret charging port. Oh yes. How could people miss this?
It was discovered by accessories maker Reserve Strap, which plans to offer a band that charges your Apple Watch while you wear it. So no more wireless, inductive charging.
Reserve Strap’s original design relied on the inductive charging space on the back of the Apple Watch, but the company posted a message a few days ago updating its intentions, after discovering the hidden port. Seems like everyone was caught unawares of this mystery port. Intentional on Apple’s part?
“Our engineers have been able to independently confirm that the 6 pin diagnostic port underneath the Apple Watch case can be used for charging,” reads the company statement. “The Reserve Strap will take advantage of this using a simple, retractable connector instead of the previous inductive charging cradle design.”
Reserve Strap is the only company testing the port’s viability as a charging solution at present.If all goes well other companies may very well attempt to jump on the bandwagon.
Technically, Apple hasn’t offered this port as a charging option however. No one knows why yet.
Even though Reserve Strap’s $250 accessory looks like a sleek charging solution, it might be a bit premature to strap a charging device to your wrist that has not been approved by Apple.
