Wild and crazy the movie Blockers is a lot of fun from mature teens. It may have a premise that is a bit offensive, but most teens today have become more mature growing up than in the past. It’s filled with a lot of comedy much like Neighbors where adults try to cope with college teens, but this time its high school and the Prom.
As a parent, how far will you go to protect your child? If it were your daughter losing their virginity, to what extent will you go to make sure they’re safe? These three parents Lisa (Leslie Mann), Hunter (Ike Barinholtz), and Mitchell (John Cena) go all out to keep their daughters away from their dates for prom. Becaue, they find out about a pact their daughters Angelica (Ramona Young), Julie (Kathryn Newton), and Sam (Gideon Aldon), have to lose their virginity.

The three daughters of neighboring families, Angelica, Julie, and Sam are the story line from the beginning through the end. The movie creates their lives as friends as they grow up and change. It all starts in kindergarten where they first mest and then clips show them aging together and the good times they spent with each other. The chemistry between the three friends is what the movie is really all about and as teens, you should enjoy the best night of their lives at prom and what follows.

The personalities of the parents are great. One of them is played by John Cena and he’s a very emotional soft hearted man. His wife, played by Leslie Mann, gets very suspicious of what her daughter and friends are going to do the night of the dance. Both Leslie Mann and John Cena haven’t kept up with the new slang that teenagers use in today’s society. Thankfully for Ike Barinholtz’s character Hunter, he knows what the kids are talking about and translates it to the clueless parents. Suspicious, the parents follow them wherever the girls go. In some cases they end up at the wrong place causing a lot of chaos and find out it’s either a dead end or a very nasty clue.
Blockers is the funniest comedy of the year so far. Ike Barinholtz provides a lot of comedy, the innocence of Leslie Mann adds more, and the strong but delicate attitude of pro wrestler John Cena is over the top. This movie is a high school version of Neighbors. (As a special note, Ike Barinholtz was also in the movie Neighbors where he played a similar part). Even the intimidating muscles on John Cena have been used elsewhere, he has played in Daddy’s Home as a tough guy with a soft spot.

Leslie Mann plays a single mom who isn’t prepared for her daughter to grow up. Her mainstay is comedy and you can see her in movies like “knocked up” and “vacation”. In this movie it’s great to see her switch up her usual roll and play the straight person to the other characters.
Warning, the comedy in this movie is sometimes offensive and unusual, and it also has some nasty things that I believe have not been shown in other movies. Don’t get yourself fooled by the movie trailer as it doesn’t give the true feel of the characters. I recommend Blockers because it’ll not be what you expected. I know I was fooled. The trailer is only the tip of the iceberg of what you will see and experience throughout this movie.
Blockers is rated R. Scenes contain nudity, drugs and alcohol, and crude language. It’s specifically not for children. (4 out of 5 Stars)
