Spike TV has released a collection of what they call COPS: Wildest Chases on DVD. The series of cable episodes involves police units across the nation as they respond to calls involving various crimes and misdemeanors. From domestic issues to burglaries, the DVD runs around 2 hours and thirty minutes without commercial interruption.

Most of the “chases” are quite mild to say the least with police coming upon the aftermath of the fleeing suspects. The attending filmed officers go over the rights of the perpetrators, show some of their take-down methods and take a lot of undesired comments from those being arrested. As far as the word “wildest” in the title, of the two and a half hours of film, the word’s a contradiction as to what’s on this DVD. This selection of episodes is really not representative to what I’ve seen on cable in the past. The only ‘wild’ pursuits are in the introduction of each segment, but the actual shown on camera are not very exciting. If you have never seen an episode of COPS then you may get a charge out of the shows, but if you are a ravenous fan of the program than it will be boring at best.

That said there is a nice clip at the end of the tape involving a run-away boy. It has a heartfelt feel that’s makes up for all the previous episodes. Also there’s a very funny arrest made in a donut shop with the officer remarking “Donut Shops make bad hiding places” to the perp. During the search of the bakery area look at the eyes of the cops as they pass by the donuts.

COPS: Wildest Chases has not been rated by the MPAA but contains police controlled violence, bleeped cuss words and sexual implied situations. Be cautious when deciding to allow immature children see the film as it does have some scenes that are inappropriate for adolescents.

FINAL ANALYSIS: If you are a COPS television follower and would like to have it handy for a gathering of friends, this DVD should get conversations going. (C )
