Kooky and inventive, the movie Surge of Power: Revenge of the Sequel has made it to Blu-ray, DVD and Video on Demand. The intentionally amateurish film takes you on a jaunt into the Si-fi world of superheroes that just want to be themselves but always seem to avoid it at any cost. If you like campy movies that’s riddled with the inane, then this silly film was made for you.
Surge’s arch enemy Metal Master has been released from prison due to overcrowding and has returned to Big City with the determination to make the power packed superhero unhappy. Still not accepted by his family Metal Master roams the streets looking for a way to make them realize that he is important to society.
One day while standing on a corner the conjurer Augur appears to Metal Master offering him a chance to be his henchman. Out to prove he can be more than a henchman to Augur he takes on a task to retrieve the most important thing that will make Augur even more powerful, the super crystals only found in Las Vegas. But, Surge gets wind of the dastardly deed and follows him to prevent the evil that would be set upon humanity.
Creator and actor Vincent J. Roth as Surge makes his movie a one of a kind, well maybe there are other silly narratives out there that should be put in this category. Keeping it as mindless as possible it kind of grows on you to where you are laughing at it, instead of with it. Some of the scenes are priceless and others insipid, but both are worthy for a gander and a guffaw.
If you are already a fan of the series, the original was made in 2004 called Surge of Power: The Stuff of heroes, this is number 2 and they are touting the release of another sequel called Surge of Power: Big City Chronicles, then you should finish this run on sentence and go out and get this one now on Blu-ray. Whew! It is filled with your kind of fun and for those who know that it’s all tongue-in-cheek. It’s even made on a low budget to make it even funnier with equipment failures a regular thing and keeps even the most natural of things juvenile. It even pushes the envelope with a few messages like “loving your child unconditionally”. Which I think is the most redeeming factor of the film in the first place.
Included with the Blu-ray are some Bonus Features:
“Behind the Scenes Featurette”- Narrated by Vincent Roth who stars, writes, produces, etc. He gives his followers a chance to see inside his mind on to why he made it, some of things you hadn’t noticed in the film, honoring Nichelle Nicoles that was in the first film ten years ago and many other notes.
“Deleted Scenes”- Include ‘Elvis on the Strip’, ‘Surge Explains Powers’, ‘Full Sushi Dinner’, and ‘SIRIUS Name Explained’
“Big City Chronicles” A sneak peek at three of the episodes in the upcoming variety show.
FINAL ANALYSIS: A fun film for fans of the first film and those who have a good sense of humor. (2.5 out of 5 Stars)
