Happy Gilmore 2 Promoting His Style of Golf

Happy Gilmore 2The return of Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler), a former hockey player who turned golf pro to save his grandmother’s house, transports us through another adventure that empowers us to reminisce through his historic run to win the gold jacket, to later winning seven gold jackets and now having to return back to the golf course. This time not only including the same slapstick comedy as the last installment, but he also conveys many more cameos and returning characters on the screen. Another one of Adam’s escapades that allows us to enjoy the memories that he has given us throughout his glorious career.

Now married to his dream girl, Virginia (Julie Bowen), former professional golf director, they both now have five kids together, four boys and a girl, living in Happy’s grandmother’s house. Happy and Virginia’s eldest son is Gordie (Maxwell Jacob Friedman), their second son is Wayne (Ethan Cutkosky), their third son Bobby (Philip Fine Schneider), and their fourth and youngest son is Terry (Conor Sherry), these fun and lovable characters are a continuation of Happy’s personality, loving their favorite hockey team the Boston Bruins, celebrating every minor win, and all and all just great rough housers. Their youngest child and only daughter, Vienna (Sunny Sandler) is a wonderful dancer, just the opposite of her brothers and is more like her mother.

After retiring due to a tragic incident and living his life in the bottle, Happy needs to return to golf to pay for his daughter’s future and get his grandmother’s house back, again. Trying to avoid a new offer made by Frank Manatee (Benny Safdie), the CEO of Maxi Energy Drink, to join a new game he is sponsoring called Maxi Golf, that would destroy the modern sport as we know it. Requiring help, he reaches out to the son of late mentor Chubbs, Slim Peterson (Lavell Crawford), who currently works at a miniature golf establishment, to get him back on track and ready for the big show. During his new expedition Happy runs across a few new friends, Oscar Mejías (Bad Bunny), his caddy, Billy Jenkins (Haley Joel Osment), a young pro-golfer, Donald Jr. (Eminem), son of the late heckler Donald Sr. (Joe Flaherty) and a few more faces that we will all remember.

As usual Sandler makes sure he includes many of his friends and some famous golfers throughout the tour. For instance, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, and Scottie Scheffler as fictionalized versions of themselves, who are members of the team representing the traditional champions at the Maxi competition. In a funny role, long term tour and all-time great golfer, John Daly becomes a fictionalized version of himself, playing as a hermit who lives in Happy’s garage. Returning to this new quest for Happy, Doug Thompson (Dennis Dugan), the head of the professional golf tour, Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), Happy’s rival who suffered a mental breakdown following his defeat at the end of the first movie, Hal L. (Ben Stiller), the abusive leader of a support group for alcoholics, and Gary Potter (Kevin Nealon), a sports commentator and former golfer. Also, his wonderful family, who we have seen grow over the years, become part of the festivities with Monica (Jackie Sandler), as Vienna’s dance teacher and Charlotte (Sadie Sandler), a member of Hal L.’s support group.

The original Adam Sandler is back, delivering his slapstick comedy with great success from the fantastic direction by Kyle Newacheck. A good and fun incorporation of the first film, bringing back many of the stars and encompassing many new ones to help Adam on his journey. As usual the performance from all the cast was impressive and hilarious allowing to heighten this narrative, we all love and cherish. Involving some special effects that help complete the illusion of the perfect drive.

It was nice that Adam found a way to build a nice tribute for Cameron Boyce who tragically passed away so young, leaving us all stunned. Also knowing that this production team, that has expanded through the years, has heart and shows how much they love their friends. Continuing to express his dedication to everyone that supported him over the years, Adam gives back to each and every one of them when he can.

Revisiting the beginning of Sandler’s career ushers back some great memories of his outstanding comedic start. Enjoying what made him big and seeing where he can take it was fun to watch, but as usual it becomes mostly about getting all of his friends in the story and somehow the experience gets away. Still worth watching and remembering what we all laughed about in the past and seeing everyone else growing up or just getting older reminds us that Adam is still here to entertain us all.

Final Comment: I based my grade on enjoyable storyline, the hilarious antics, and the return of the old Sandler comedy.

Stars 3.25 out of 5
