Ever wonder what technology we will possess in the future? Will that technology be ours or from some alien race? What if that technology was here right now? The world might just be in danger, especially if it is in the hands of a child.
When Elijah “Eli” Solinski (Myles Truitt) finds this futuristic gun in an abandon warehouse, things begin to get interesting for him and his family. Eli is a good student and does very well in school. His father Hal Solinski (Dennis Quaid), owns a construction company that is rebuilding Detroit and has been very busy for the past few years.
After the death of his mother, Eli starts to struggle. He begins to salvage all sorts of metals from the abandon buildings near where he lives. Most of these places post no trespassing signs around their fenced in barriers. When Eli gets in trouble at school for the first time his father is not there to pick him up. He begins to feel that he is on his own.
Jimmy Solinski (Jack Reynor), Eli’s brother, has been away at prison for 8 years and is now just getting out. Staying with Eli and his father is his only option at this time. He is in need of a job but Hal doesn’t want the liability. Jimmy and Hal don’t seem to be getting along and this makes Eli wonder about their future.
Jimmy owes lots of money to Taylor Balik (James Franco) for 8 years of protection in prison. Taylor a local loan shark and gang leader that can be very mean at times is not threating him and his family. Jimmy is in desperate need to find a way to pay back Taylor. Things go wrong and both Jimmy and Elijah are on the run.
Co-directors and writers Jonathon and Josh Baker make an attempt to start a science fiction story that could span into several films, but seem to leave out the excitement the film needs to gain the interest from the viewers. The storyline is a simple run from the bad guy but tries to add some sort of science fiction and special effects with the ray gun that Eli finds. Not much was there until the end, when all the excitement begins.
This story was somewhat disappointing, and the film lacked any real science fiction. Most of the special effects centered on the weapon that Eli found. It was a below average film until the end, where all the special effects starts to begin and a promise of the excitement in the future. If this film survives in the future in, then this story could be much more exciting.
Final Comment: I based my grade on the average storyline, and the limited special effects. 3 Stars
