“Kubrick By Kubrick” a Fascinating Documentary

It’s the kind of documentary that most all filmgoer’s can relate, especially the buffs that have probably watched all of Stanley Kubrick’s work. Like the title Kubrick By Kubrick, the movie it’s just that. With a great number of speakers of many aspects of film, coupled with photos, interviews, and stock video, Kubrick’s legacy gets a turn on the big screen. The film moved and inspired me a bit and even made me laugh at times, but knowing he has passed on also expelled sadness as well.

The soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey is playing in the background as the music kicks into gear, It’s 1999 and Stanley Kubrick has died at the age of 70. The TV announcers give the much deserved accolades to the man who brought many of his memorable films to cinemas around the world. “Stanley Kubrick was one of the greatest and most controversial masters of Cinema” says one commentator. And he was beyond a doubt a producer director that could bring more than one genre to the screen and make his audience a believer. His science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey or example, opened the doorway for many writers, producers and directors to enter with their exciting and original space adventures.

It’s more than a documentary or biography, but a must see nonfiction film. Covering each of his films as to the reason for scenes, the development of characters or the use of important production techniques makes it a very good teaching tool as well. Pivotal scenes are explained and how to get the right interpretation are part of the audience’s experience.

Kubrick by Kubrick has not been rated but contains some nudity and depiction of war violence.
