As Marvel expands into other areas of its universe we see more interesting characters that have stories of their own. Some have similar themes while others expand out to include newer adventures for us to see and a more in depth glimpse of this amazing fantasy world.
Deep in the Brazilian jungle Constance Webb (Kerry Bishe), pregnant scientist and spider hunter, is searching for a certain kind of spider. This arachnoid will help her discover cures for all types of diseases. When she discovers the spider, things begin to go wrong and her partner Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) steals the rare spider and flees.
Years later, Cassandra “Cassie” Webb / Madame Webb (Dakota Johnson), is a paramedic that is determined to always rescue her patients at any cost. Her co-worker and friend Ben Parker (Adam Scott) supports her purpose but always tries to keep her from going too far. Along the way Cassie meets Julia Cornwall / Spider-Woman (Sydney Sweeney), a young girl of a family member that was saved by Cassie. Her neighbor downstairs is Anya Corazon / Arana (Isabella Merced) and almost hits reckless Mattie Franklin / Spider-Women (Celeste O’Connor), a skateboarder and street kid, when trying to rush an injured patient to the hospital. Together their paths intertwine as the narrative begins to unfold. All three of these girls become a significant part in Cassie’s life.
Director and writer S.J. Clarkson was trying to put together a fun and enjoyable story that seemed to cover way too much material, never staying long enough on any portion to grasp that viewers full interest. The characters did gain my attention and would fun to see sometime in the future in another Marvel story. The performances were very entertaining and could have lots of potential when they all grow up and become that superheroes they become in the future.
An entertaining tale that introduces some new and fun heroes that leads you on a path of wonder and amazement. The narrative did try to cover too much material that it gave you the impression of a very long trailer, leaving you somewhat puzzled. Since, the special effects are not too far out there watching this one at home might be worth it in the long run.
Final Comment: I based my grade on the entertaining storyline and wonderful performance by the cast.
