MCAS Miramar Air Show ’23 – San Diego

This year’s annual Miramar Air Show was bigger than ever (last year’s was a bit COVID limited). Running from September 22nd to the 24th, the nation’s largest military air show returned to provide a unique, immersive experiences. Static displays and daytime shows featured military demonstration teams, civilian aerobatic teams, aerial solo acts, vintage aircraft and warbirds. Visitors were treated to the feeling of flight in one of many simulators at the Innovation Tech Expo. The show offered friends and family some truly unforgettable memories. Visitors could get up close and personal to experience what our Joint Forces are capable of.  The Marine Air Ground Task Force demonstration showcased aircraft, explosions, and demonstrated Marines performing an assault on a crowd line. America’s Air Show, presented by the United States Marine Corps, also showcased the US Navy Blue Angels, the US Air Force’s F-16, the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter, and Osprey demos.

This year’s MCAS Air Show drew capacity crowds.

My brief interview with the Lt. Commander Amanda Lee, the only woman on the Blue Angels team (below). A native of Mounds View, Minnesota. Lt. Commander Amanda Lee graduated from Irondale high school in 2004, where she competed in the soccer, ice hockey, and swimming. While attending the University of Minnesota Duluth, Amanda  enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician.  She was elected to commission as a Pilot through the Seaman to Admiral (STA-21) a commissioning program in 2009. The following year, Lee attended the Naval Science Institute (NSI) for officer training in Newport, Rhode Island, and simulate simultaneously began her studies at Old Dominion University in Northfork, Virginia, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. Amanda joined the Blue Angels in September 2022. She has accumulated more than 1,360 flight hours in over 225 carrier based landings. Her decorations include four Navy and Marine Corps achievement medals in various personal and unit awards. (Jets were performing near us.)

I also had a chance to interview Holly Phibbs, a member of the elite Blue Angels Maintenance Control team.
