MTV’s slightly hidden musical gem, New Cassettes, has announced their first national tour for the months of March and April. Accompanying their paramount tour will be the release of their third album, Winterhead, on April 3, which has already received critical acclaim. The SXSW alums from Northampton, England will tour with Scottish indie-rock group We Were Promised Jetpacks, performing at venues everywhere from Colorado to Connecticut.
The rock quintet claims to draw influence from iconic bands such as Radiohead, Wheat, The Police and (my personal favorite) Jimmy Eat World. The twinge of an English accent in the vocals is reminiscent of The Kooks while their generally upbeat and infectious rhythms are comparable to Bloc Party. Emily Zemler of RCRD LBL poignantly, and quite accurately, reflects on New Cassettes as, “A rollicking Brit-rock number that’s boisterous and propulsive like a cousin to Artic Monkeys or early Franz Ferdinand.”
With their latest album being mixed by songwriter and producer Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne and sound engineer Geoff Sanoff who has lent a talented hand to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, New Cassettes must be doing something right. I highly recommend making a front-row appearance at one of New Cassettes’ tour dates if only to remind yourself what solid indie-rock meshed with new wave is supposed to sound like.
