Surprisingly good, the documentary Semi Colin featuring one of the most iconic cartoonist in the business is a tell all that mesmerizes and entertains. Not the usual doc, this one takes you into the domain of artist Colin Murray while he nonchalantly tells you his life story while drawing his erotic figures that are the essence of his graphic novels. Fascinating and titillating, the adults only DVD offers some eye opening special features that show all.
NOTE: Before you play the film go to Audio in your selection area and turn on the Directors comments. There is a LOT of long shots with no dialogue and it plays better with writer/director Damien Lay talking about Colin Murray during the film. One prominent example is the opening shot of nearly 15 minutes long of Murray sleeping in his bed.
Once the opening 15 minutes has lapsed, Colin takes us to his studio where he works on his graphic novel. He talks about the many facets of his work and how he grew up wanting to draw at an early age. He tells how he wanted to draw the female form when he reached his teens and from then on continued the rest of his life doing so. He reveals his penchant for erotic art and it wasn’t till the 21st century that he had his first graphic novel published.
The film mesmerizes while he draws and it’s a cool lesson in cartoon art. Damien Lay keeps his camera in close as Murray shades in the forms in one of his frames. It takes Murray two years to draw one novel and his most recent have been extremely explicit. Every release has been sold out and can only be purchased from someone who wants to give it up.
In addition to the director’s commentary the documentary has a feature called “Artwork and Music Montage” where the focus is on Colin Murray’s explicit sexual drawings that are included in his most recent graphic novel. While he leaves nothing to the imagination, according to Murray he feels that nudity including most private of parts is not porn. The film has not been rated by the MPAA, but be advised that explicit sex, including intercourse is shown in his drawings during the film and in the special feature.
