A good documentary usually explores something that may be of interest to many different audiences, but if the content is more than just informational, it becomes something special. This is the beauty of the movie Blink. The film quickly gets under your skin with a story that goes straight for the heart. Brilliantly filmed under some of the toughest conditions, that not only include sight and sound, but the will of one family’s determination to traverse the world unafraid and totally open to what the next day may bring.
Edith Lemay and Sébastien Pelletier are parents to Mia (age 13), Léo (age 11), Colin (age 9) and Laurent (age 7). Three of the children of The Pelletier Family have retinitis pigmentosa, a rare and incurable disease that causes severe optical impairment. According to Google, the disease causes progressive vision loss that include loss of color sensitivity to bright light, poor peripheral vision and even night blindness. So knowing that the three children may never see some of the wonders of the world with normal vison, they set out to travel to parts of the world that most people only see in a picture book. Why you may ask? Because they want the wonders to be stored in their heads by seeing them first hand.
Directors Daniel Roher and Edmund Stenson give the viewer a unique opportunity to see it through the eyes and minds of the youngsters as they visit the most unlikely countries like Namibia, Zambia and Tanzania, Bali, Nepal, Mongolia and Egypt. Pushing through mountains, great planes, deserts, and rivers the family perseveres beyond your imagination.
Blink is a must see for all ages and is available in local theaters. I rate the film 5 of 5 stars for families.
