Captivating and fascinating the foreign film Compartment No. 6 has been released in local theaters. The story could have been filmed in any country, but may not have been as interesting in culture and behavior considering the state of today’s world. Nicely acted and produced, the movie takes you on a train ride into another world unrelated to America. Released by Sony Pictures Classics, this studio is well known for delivering out of the ordinary films to theaters.

On a trip from Finland to Russia Laura (Seidi Haarla), a Finish woman, attends a party at a rooming house where she has forged a sexual relationship with Irina (Dinara Drukarova), the owner. With a home movie camera, she has been filming her experiences being with the Russian people. As a student at a Finland University, her objective is to create memories and to complete a mission to photograph the 10,000 year old Petroglyphs in Murmansk, Russia.
Following the party and a night of intimacy with Irena, the two part with Laura taking a train to her final destination in Murmansk. As she boards the train and reaches her Compartment she sees Ljoha (Yurly Borisov), a Russian traveler, who will be occupying it with her. Noticing his uncouth behavior, she goes to the train conductor Natalie (Julia Aug) and complains. Natalie tells her that there is no other compartment options on her train as it’s packed with people. So begins a journey for Laura opening new experiences that will change her life in a way she never expected.

Compartment No. 6 has been rated R by the MPAA for language and some sexual references. There is also some minor violence and smoking. The movie won the Grand Prize at Cannes Film Festival and was nominated by the Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture for non-English Language. The film is a sweet treat for film buffs and those who are looking for something different. (4 out of 5 stars)
