Campy, ludicrous, purposely amateurish and totally over the top, and that’s the good parts of the film Deep Murder. The movie’s nonsense personified and nicely presented as such. And the film even comes with a warning, so make sure you pause the DVD to read it before proceeding.
It’s a usual day in the Dangler household with Babs Dangler (Katie Aselton) getting her morning roll in the hay with brother in-law Doug (Jerry O’Connell), college jock Jace (Chris Redd) playing video games with high school nerd Hugh Dangler (Quinn Beswick) and Richard Dangler’s (Christopher McDonald), the matriarch of the family, constantly doing business over the phone. Oh and then there’s the live-in babysitter (Jessica Parker Kennedy). If you have to ask what she’s doing there, you haven’t watched any soft porn.
There’s a knock on the door and it’s Weather Scientist Dr. Bunny (Stephanie Drake). She has stopped by to inform the household that hurricane Muff is coming and it’s too late to evacuate the town. They all hunker down for the worst and that’s not all. Just as things are about to settle down, Doug’s dead body has been found.
So begins a “who done it” of the most preposterous kind. The crazy little horror comedy is nicely directed by Nick Corirossi. And although it’s his first full feature, and it shows, I like it. He put together a good cast that knows how to be campy in a good way, plays on a few good twists and although he makes his film a bit predictable, it doesn’t matter.
It’s a film of revenge, I think, but maybe it’s more of retribution, maybe. It’s fun to sort out because most of the killing is definitely creative innuendos, but with style of course. So, are the characters actors in this soft porn comedy, or is this a rehearsal for death? Or at least we are lead to believe something weird is going on. If I am confusing you, well you may as well be as this comical mind-bender will if I haven’t.
BONUS:
“Alternate Ending” as if they really need one.
Deep Murder has not been rated by the MPAA, but contains a lot of crude and prurient language, sex, graphic nudity, gore, violence and some very odd ways to die. The film will be released on DVD on August 6th. Do not let youngsters watch this film.
FINAL ANALYSIS: a fun Adult film with some surprises, or I think they will be for you. I’m pretty sure though. (3.5 out of 5 Stars)
