It’s been 35 years since Oscar winner Rain Man was released and the story still resonates as one of the best ever. The film not only took Oscar Best for 1988, but heralded Dustin Hoffman as Best Actor, Barry Levinson as Best Director and Ron Bass and Barry Morrow walked away with best Screenplay. The combined value of their efforts are what made the movie a classic. Now recently restored it can be seen in 4K for home viewing.
The story follows Charlie Babbitt a high energy car salesman who buys and sells expensive cars for top prices. He’s always on the top of his game and as we meet him he’s in the middle of deal that involves his sale of 4 Lamborghinis that could either make him rich or tank his business. Trying to deliver the cars that are not emissions approved and before his loans come due, it’s like playing sudden death with his future in the business. Just when he’s about to finish his deal, he gets a phone call that his estranged father, a multi-millionaire, has died, and Charlie has been requested to be at the reading of his will.

Needing some big cash, he heads to the reading. But there’s on hitch, he gets informed that a brother he never knew, Raymond Babbitt, an autistic savant, is also in the picture as a possible “next of kin”. So begins a story that challenges the two men leading them on a path that twists and turns their directions in life. It’s an excellent film for those who like stores about life and its many road bumps and this one has some real doozies.
