Another thriller for HULU, the film Prey gets released on the streaming giant and it’s worth watching. Based somewhat on the Predator Series, the alien monster is a vicious as the original nemesis. If you like your heroes facing the wild and wicked, this movie will feed your craving and then some.
It’s the mid 1700’s and we find Naru (Amber Midthunder), a member of the Comanche Nation taking her daily trip into the woods to help provide for the tribe. She works hard only stopping to practice her tomahawk throwing. She wants to be a hunter like the rest of the male tribe me members, but it would be unlikely as she would have to kill a mountain lion.
Her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers) in order to achiever her desires she needs to hunt something hunting her. Director Dan Trachtenberg lays out the premise early on to get the audience ready for what’s to follow. He’s right to do so as it leavers very little to know about the characters before Naru faces her plight of fighting something way more challenging and brutal as a lion.
The acting here is incredible good by the whole cast that’s acted mostly with indigenous actors, a tip of the hat to the casting director. The script shows the pride of a nation that fought hard to recover from their past. Depicting a village of strong willed young men, they are, in my estimation, spot on.
As the teen rebel, Amber Midthunder takes on the strong willed character in her first starring role. And she makes it her own, putting together a character that becomes a example for teens to twentysomethings. Her ability to adapt to the tough environment and become Naru while making the movie is admirable. I look forward to seeing her in future role as an action star.
Prey has been rated R by the MPAA for strong bloody violence. The violence is extreme and very gory and there are disturbing images. The sets and locations are magnificent, the costumes perfect, cinematography and the storyline, although a bit reminiscent of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator, it’s still well worth watching. (4 out of 5 Stars)
