Cleverly written and backed up with a LOT of CGI/AI the film Resident Evil takes a big dip into horror with a storyline that gets played out at high speed. Combining a hefty amount of fright laced with comedy, the film burns up the screen, energizes its audience and turns intended fiction into “movie reality”. If you want a shock flick that will jump you into the horror movie season, this little gem will do the trick.
Bryan is a very likeable guy who will go out of his way to please his wife, even take on a delivery in the dead of winter for extra money. After dropping of a liver to a hospital, he’s asked to make a special run to a medical center in the mountains. It’s not JUST a delivery, but one that involves life or death. With a blizzard upon him as he reaches the foothills of the drop off location, his life takes a devilish turn when he hits a woman that steps out in front of his car. Nothing will stop him however from completing his task, except unintended possibly the weird occupant he finds himself taking to his hospital destination. But getting their will put him in danger, complications, and a set up for several intense death defying interventions.
Loosely based on the methodology involved in video game “Resident Evil,” director Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) presses all the buttons on his “controller” as he leads his likable protagonist through a maze of blood, violence and debauchery. He’s cunning with his character Bryan, a bold yet calculating dude with a lot of nerve and will to live. Cregger’s sets and locations are perfect for this determined delivery guy that has to navigate the impossible. With each step, fight, challenge and defense you want to cheer him on and react to his fight to last to the curtain falls.
Resident Evil has been rated R by the MPA for strong bloody violence, gore and language throughout. For lovers of a thrilling action, dark humor horror film, then this film is perfect; especially if you like a lot of guts, wierdness and bloody body parts. This is not the movie The End of Oak Street, that’s mild compared to this shock and awe beauty. (5 out 5 stars)
