“SIBYL” Enjoyable

Virginie Efira in SIBYL photo Music Box Films

The film Sibyl is a very good scenic film with some excellent cinematography. It has a reasonably enjoyable storyline that isn’t too jaded, and the acting is actually very good. Now on DVD and Blu-ray the film is targeted to females 20’s to 40’s. It plays out in French with English subtitles.

Sibyl (Virginie Efira), a psychotherapist, has made a decision to quit her practice and write another book that has been her desire for a long time. In the process of telling her patients that they would have to see someone else, she finds that one of her patients, and actress Margot (Adéle Exarchopoulos), can be a good target for a lot of the content for the book. Leading Margot on while trying to fix most of her problems, Sibyl fails sending Margot on a tangent while filming off the coast of an active volcano.

The story takes a turn for the insane as Sibyl finds herself creating problems for the cast and director of Margot’s movie. Director of Sibyl Justine Triet does a fairly good job of setting up her story from the opening to just prior to the finale when things start to get a bit off course. While it looks like she means well, the word absurd comes to mind. Not to give away the last 20 minutes of the film, I’ll just say it’s probably the only real comedy in the story.

BONUS FEATURES include:
• Feature Audio Commentary by Film Critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
• Interviews with director Justine Triet, and actors Virginie Efira, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Niels Schneider and Paul Hamy
• Photo Gallery
• Theatrical trailer and teasers
• English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

The film has not been rated by the MPAA, but contains language, explicit sex, nudity, drug use and smoking. The film plays out in French mixed with some English. The subtitles go by very quickly due to the speed at which most French people talk, but there is a pause button on your DVD/Blu-ray player to get a pretty good understanding of the film. However, being that the French are very physically expressive, you can easily understand each of the character’s personalities.
