Animation has really improved in the independently made films over the years and especially for children. The characters in the G and PG adventure films have become more likeable and in some cases a bit sillier providing the perfect combination to keep your child entertained for an hour or so. Even the sinister characters are interestingly not so scary, but are still menacing enough not to bore the little tykes.
This is the case of the animated movie The Snow Queen a story by Hans Christian Andersen with characters that can be enjoyed by most all siblings, even those that have entered their early teenage years. The quest film finds Gerda, her pet Ferret Luta and Orm the troll on a journey to save her brother Kai. The Snow Queen has vanquished all the Wizards from the Earth and taken their powers even Gerda’s father who made magic mirrors that showed one’s true self.
Unbeknown to Gerda, Orm has made friends with her the only heir to the Wizard’s powers. Under the control of the Snow Queen, Orm has already delivered Kai to the menacing ruler and now has the task of luring Gerda to the same fate. The group travels through perilous ice and snow fending off obstacles on their dangerous journey. When something causes Orm to change his mind, the impending conflict with the queen turns in Gerda’s favor.
The fun film has some very good messages that include love of family, hope and courage. It shows how Gerda will do anything to save her brother, even if it takes a tough journey and a strong will to face the Snow Queen. She also has a kind heart and a love for her pet ferret. She protects Luta, saves her from jeopardy and in return has a friend she can count on. The film pits the characters against some almost impossible odds, but the courage of Gerda and Orm overcome the dominate queen’s chances to rule the world.
The Snow Queen has been rated PG by the MPAA for mild action, rude humor and brief language.
