‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ Secret Operations Begin

During World War Two, the British army was fighting a losing battle and beginning to break under constant German bombardment.  The government was at odds on what to do next, some wanting to try and trust one of the evilest dictators in history. They were needing some sort of last effort to turn things around, before they might have to surrender to Hitler’s regime. One man risked everything to stop their enemies’ domination of the seas. Based on Damien Lewis’s books ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: How Churchill’s Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops’ and ‘Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII’.

The true stories of Winston Churchill (Rory Kinnear) secret missions and the beginning of England’s special forces is a tale of five desperadoes and two undercover agents who may have single handedly saved the world as we know it. All current prisoners, some with military experience are led by Gus March-Phillipps (Henry Cavill), a born leader with a criminal past, the Swede Anders Lassen (Alan Ritchson), who an interesting fellow with strength and desire to avenge his brother, Freddy Alvarez (Henry Golding), trained explosive expert, Henry Hayes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), the young Irishman, and Geoffrey Appleyard (Alex Pettyfer), the designer of all of their strategies. They are joined by to undercover agents, Marjorie Stewart (Eiza González) and Mr. Heron (Babs Olusanmokun), hotel and bar owner.

On direct order from Winston Churchill, Brigadier Gubbins ‘M’ (Cary Elwes), and special assistance Ian Fleming (Freddie Fox), the team must avoid the German fleet south to Africa heading to a port city off the coast of Cameroon, where they will ronde vie with the two undercover agents. Together they are charged to find a way to destroy the U-Boat supply ships located in Fernando Po (Bioko). The German forces are led by Heinrich Luhr (Til Schweiger), who was sent to make sure the supply ships were protected and Captain Binea (Henrique Zag), who is in charge of the local Spanish military. When time becomes an issue, the team discovers that they will need more assistance, forcing them to seek out the help of the local prince, Kambili Kalu (Danny Sapani), who is the leader of a secret military gorilla force.

Director and writer Guy Ritchie developed an excellent storyline based on a book that reveals the challenges made by important figures from that time. Many hard choices had to be made by Winston Churchill that if he decided the wrong way, it could have resulted in a crucial downfall for the Allied forces. Guy showed how much these secret missions were needed to allow for the Americans to be able to safely cross the Atlantic without U-Boat encounters. Richie also built fantastic special effects when needed to present the production of the scene; like with explosions, during the many battle scenes, and the implied violence to express the cruelty from these unsung heroes. Along with the spectacular performance by the cast and the perfectly placed hilarious antidotes that keeps the narrative wonderfully entertained. He also Found and developed a script that could relate to the film Inglourious Basterds, in how a group of strongly influential men used improper means to defeat the Germans, that also included nicely placed comedy throughout. The success of the film should be very similar to that film’s outcome.

Final Comment: I based my grade on the outstanding presentation by the crew, the terrific presentation of the special effects, and the marvelous storyline.

Stars 4.25 out of 5.
