“79 Parts” A Blast of the Past

It’s a stitch, the very silly but funny movie 79 Parts reminds one of the comedies of the past when all hell breaks loose and no one’s there to pick up the pieces. I would think by now most everyone that this film targets has seen a movie where someone borrows some money from the mob and has to pay it back within a period of time or its curtains. Although that is the plot of this film and so much like those that have come to theaters many years hence, this one’s can be considered a “blast from the past.”

It’s New York in 1979 and Jack Anderson (Ryan O’ Callaghan) awakens with the realization that he owes $4,962 by 5 pm that day or he will not be able to graduate from law school. His best friend and classmate Gino (Johnny Solo) wants only the best for Jack, but his idea of getting the nearly $5,000 comes with a short fall investment. In order to pull it off Gino has to persuade loan shark and chop shop owner Dennis Slattery (Aldan Redmond) to lend Jack the money to pay off the college. But, in order to satisfy the loan within 40 days, he has to pay it back with interest in that period of time or bad things will happen. Sound familiar?

Without risk there is no gain. But wait, Gino has that covered as he has a tip on a sure winner at the race track that will bring Jack to even with Slattery. However, now that you know the scheme, it’s how it gets played out in the script that makes the twisty film worth the watch.

Director Ari Taub (The Fallen) does a good job of following the formula and give his film an ends to its means. Together Ryan O’ Callaghan and Johnny Solo make a good pair of dumb and dumber their performances lend credence to why their characters find themselves in a big mess. While Jack cannot foresee the danger he’s getting into, it’s Gino that seals his fate by digging a deeper hole with each nutty scheme.

79 Parts has not been rated by the MPAA, but contains, minor violence, brief drug use, some sexuality, and language. The film gets its release on VOD so check your carrier for times and availability.
