DISCLOSURE DAY “It’s Madness”

Emily Blunt is Margaret Fairchild and Josh O'Connor is Dr. Daniel Kellner in DISCLOSURE DAY, directed by Steven Spielberg

Using the benefit of the awareness we are now receiving about outer space visits from alien life, Steven Spielberg releases Disclosure Day. The sci-fi thriller puts his audience in a fantasy with real life disclosures being released on the evening news being fed to us in bits. Government videos and photos, mostly flying “saucers” that dive in the ocean and those spotted in the night skies, are not included in this film, but some great startling AI gets staged.

Spielberg’s movie is a thriller, a chase race with a lot of action and drama right up to the last minute, and for that teens to twenties it’s worth the watch.

On the run with video evidence of extraterrestrials stolen from Wardex Tech Corp and packed inside a special encapsulate computer memory drive, skilled cybersecurity employee Daniel (Josh O’Conner) wants the world to know the truth behind the extraterrestrials. Rushing to hand off the drive to a TV station that can broadcast it around the world, he’ll have to avoid Wardex’s special security. Fearing that his girlfriend Jane (Eve Hewson) may be in danger, he takes her along for the ride.

The film has double danger going at the same time when well known meteorologist Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) gets picked to be the contact and spokesperson that will present Daniel’s evidence on the air. The memory drive must be handed to her directly as it’s enclosed in its special casing. Along with her boyfriend Jackson (Wyatt Russell) the two must flee from militants that are ordered to use deadly force if necessary at a destination set up by Daniel. The separate action scenes fly by switching back and forth between the two couples being pursued.

Director and Story Writer Steven Spielberg does a pretty good job of bringing the very convoluted film to the screen. Being the centers of attraction, Emily Blunt’s character and Josh O’Conner’s demands a lot of close attention from the audience to enjoy this complex story so be warned. Also a bit over the top is the use of a lot of “Avatar like” connections by Wardex’s chief Noah (Colin Firth) who is overseeing the chase. Helping to instill excitement and danger to the film however is John Williams’ (Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Raiders of the lost Ark) amazing musical score and thankfully bolsters every scene.

Disclosure Day has been rated PG-13 by the MPA for action/violence, some bloody images and strong language. The chase scenes do include some scenes of extreme danger and bloody shootouts so be cautions when wanting to bring immature children to see it. The average filmgoer may find the movie a “hard pill to swallow”, but for thriller junkies it’s an okay bet. The finale gives the impression of a second film coming and I would venture to believe it would be called “LISTEN”. 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
