Lowlakes’ Self-Titled EP – Familiar, Yet Strikingly Evocative

Lowlakes have arrived, fostering the progression of alternative mood music in the tradition of ambient-pop landscapers Antony and the Johnsons, Sigur Ros, and only a handful of others in that loosely populated scene.

The Australian dreamers of dark melody are here to share their brand of subtly reflective song with the release of their self-titled EP. Take a listen to their premiere track “Song For Motion” and get a jump on the buzz …

The Lowlakes EP is set for release on March 17. Featuring Tom Snowden’s beautiful and broadly ranged vocals, it succeeds in crafting a visceral narrative ripe with emotional exposure. While the first two cuts, “Song For Motion” and “Catch the Breeze” are much like a gentle whispering wind that will both assuage and intrigue, a slightly up-tempo “Buffalo”, tinged with soul, raises the stakes and calls attention to brilliantly abled craftsmen of story and theme. The EP’s last cut, “Arctic House”, sees a deepening of Snowden’s versatile tone, really calling on Antony Hegarty’s style of delivery. Perhaps to a lesser affect, though none the less well rendered.

Check out the minimalist black and white video of the recording for “Song For Motion” below:

Watching the natural way in which such rich, textured vocals escape Snowden’s (who, unlike a Hegarty, has the face and personage of an everyman) throat draws a kind of awed tingle from somewhere in the gut. There is no other imagery required to compliment a song so strikingly evocative.

Lowlakes’ EP hits March 17. What we figure is that perhaps it will be just the ingredient for a successful wind-down after a raucous St. Paddy’s day.
