“Serendipity” Sincere and Remarkable

“Serendipity- the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way” Google

Very interesting and heartfelt, the film Serendipity is a documentary about a known sculptor who fought cancer, yet never giving up on her artistic gifts. More of an understanding of life’s pitfalls, Prune Nourry adds it to her art in a gesture of an example for others with the disease.

Young sculptor Prune Nourry digs into clay and many other materials putting together art that has meaning. She has been recognized for her work displaying women’s bodies and their role in bringing new life to the planet. In the film Serendipity, however she begins a new task when she is diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s kind of ironic when you think of it, a woman who has displayed the naked female body having to alter her own. But, it’s also a chance to incorporate her fight against cancer in her work to show others not to give up.

Photographed by Agnes Varda and written by Prune Nourry, the film goes on from there to show how she prepared for a later family life, encouraged women all over the world to feel good about themselves and work deeper in her art to draw notice to her plight. It’s a sensitive and meaningful film showing her labor over monstrous projects, having fun with dinner that has a menu for artificial procreation, a sperm bar, showing youngsters from another land how to enjoy a project together, working with other artists to bring a sculpture to life, all of which accentuate the beauty and power of women.

Nourry shows a lot of her work in the film from statues to busts and chooses her favorites for display in art exhibitions. I her love artistic work and I’m fascinated by the amount and work that goes into it. A must see for the intricate, emotional and magnitude of the film, I will look at art in another perspective because of Serendipity.

Serendipity has not been rated by the MPAA, but contains language, brief nudity and artistic images of the female anatomy.

FINAL ANALYSIS: It’s a nice break from the many activist documentaries. (4 out of 5 Stars)
