“DOOM PATROL” The Complete Second Season

A spoof on science gone crazy the fantasy, sci-fi series Doom Patrol has released its second season on DVD and Blu-ray. Doom Patrol, a satire featuring a mad scientist that creates a group of odd characters with superpowers started in 2019 and had a good run with its adult rating of TV-MA. Continuing to shock with rude language, sex and many mature punch lines, the story continues with a growing number of super hero outcasts,

In this sequel series we find Dr. Niles in London England 1927 and using his odd miniaturized superheroes as a sideshow. It’s an attempt to make money so he can continue his work of finding a serum to reverse his scientific process and make his “freaks” become normal. At one of his sideshows his clown faced ringmaster has introduced Dorothy the “Ape Faced” girl. She has the power over her pet monster. When the audience gets unruly, Dorothy loses control of her pet and it spreads disaster throughout the tent.

In this series we find Cliff the “Tin Man”, Jane a wicked “Sad Girl”, Vic the “Boy Hero” a cyborg and Rita the “Fair Princess” awaiting a chance to be brought back to their original self with the help Larry/Gary, an erratic scientist. Each of the episodes titles are hint as to what will be going on in that segment of the group’s maturation, degradation and failed experiments. The nine titles are “Fun Size Patrol”, “Tyme Patrol”, “Pain Patrol”, “Sex Patrol”, “Finger Patrol”, “Space Patrol”, “Dumb Patrol”, “Dad Patrol” and “Wax Patrol.”

If you are an adult, it’s a fun parody and once you get into it, the series gets binge crazy. Doom Patrol has been rated TV-MA and contains sex, language, gore and disturbing images, rude gestures. It is sold separately from Snowpiercer, but the two make an entertaining combo for your library. Doom Patrol gets a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

“SNOWPIERCER” The Complete First Season

From theatrical film to television series, the script goes on as we find the occupants of a train moving at lightning speed with no end of the line in sight. As the weather changed without a chance to stop the blazing heat of the sun, the nations of the world decided to block out the relentless rays and thus causing the planet to freeze over. As a last chance effort a train with 1001 cars was built by Mr. Wilford of Wilford Industries, a private company in a chance for survival.

Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connelly in SNOWPIERCER

Fueled by perpetual motion, the train could travel around the world on a special track and continue to do so with cars filled with livestock, continuous vegetables from gardens, and a water filtration system. Only the richest were able to purchase a ticket for a ride that may last long enough for the sun to break through again making the Earth relivable. But, as the train was about to pull out of the station, a sizable group of homeless people jumped on board and now occupy the last cars of the train. This is the story of what the rulers, passengers and crew had to do to stay alive.

Run by the founder Joseph Wilford (Sean Bean), the conductor Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) and guards at the front of the train, their daily tasks has now unexpectedly include the passengers in the rear. However, in the rear cars the dozens of train hoppers are headed up by Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) who has a reputation as a dissident rebel rouser. To get that group under control Layton is brought to the front car where he is mildly interrogated and offered a proposition involving getting his end of the train to cooperate with Wilford’s guidance. But the going is rough and things change day by day with the train headed for avalanches, mechanical problems and even a riot.

As good as the film, TNT series holds nothing back as creators Josh Friedman and Graeme Manson put their fine actors through their paces. The first season of Snowpiercer is exciting, gripping and riveting as each of the 10 one hour episodes plays out. The sets and exterior snow covered landscape has a lot to do with the production and the creators budget must have been huge.
