You would think that if the movie The Sheep Detectives had cast that included a lot of the talking Woolley animals that it would be a kid’s film. You would be half right because the 30 and over movie goers should like the film as well. Nicely delivered to the big screen, the movie has a theme much like an Agatha Christie film without the rude language, bloody killing and other adult folderol. That said, mom and dad should find themselves laughing it up as well.

Sheepherder George Hardy (Hugh Jackman) loves living off the land with a rather large heard of sheep. In fact what he loves best is his endearing sheep and he has named each one of them. If you were in the area you would hear him reading murder mysteries to the wooly animals you would think he is a bit touched. But George has found that reading the mystery novels seems to calm them before their sleepy time at sunset. After the lights go out one evening and while the sheep converse about the murder mystery that was read to them, a real murder ends the life of George Hardy. Wanting to find the killer, the sheep decide to investigate on their own.

The film moves along at a nice pace and after a short while it becomes Agatha Christie 2.0 with not only a bit of a serious tone, but an intriguing script that director Kyle Balda handles very well. The talking sheep have some greats providing the voices that most adults will be recognizing right away and it adds another level to the story. Leading the pack is Bryan Cranston as Sebastian and Julia Louis Dreyfus speaking for Lily. They bring a satirically serious tone and as animals up the comic delivery for some adult laughs. But the standouts are the AI army that brings the sheep to life with perfect cud chewing realism.

The Sheep Detectives has been rated PG by the MPAA for thematic material, some violent content and brief language. Most of the violence is handled with kid gloves so depending on the maturity of the children, it should go over their heads. Somehow the kid’s nursery rhyme “Baa Baa Black Sheep” figures into the plot and I found myself humming the tune on the way home. If you like the general storyline, are up for some guessing on who done it, save some money on a baby sitter, bring the youngsters along with you. Oh, and don’t let them pull the wool over your eyes at the candy counter.
