Many people who might be dealing with some sort of disabling condition or injury that requires them to use a walking cane or some other sort of aid for them to walk are naturally a bit hesitant. Using a cane can tend to make someone feel as if they’re prematurely aging or that they’re calling attention to their condition.
This isn’t the case. Using walking canes is actually a part of daily life for people of all ages.
The fact is that for many centuries, unique walking canes were used for both expression and style. If you ever find yourself needing to use these accouterments so that you can maintain your balance, it can also be a fantastic opportunity for you to express your personality.
Instead of being embarrassed by having to use a cane, use it with all of the confidence you have and to help with that, here are a few fictional and historical figures portrayed in films and tv that are known for sporting them.
House Used a Walking Cane
Do you remember that hit series from TV called House? The notoriously sarcastic and witty Dr. Gregory House assisted with launching the walking cane back into popularity within this past decade.
You can find adjustable folding canes that feature a simple appearance and that look a lot like the cane used by Dr. House on that show. These might appear to be simple walking sticks, but they have a couple of fantastic adaptable features, such as adjustable height and the ability to be folded for easy storage when you’re not using it.
The Formidable Winston Churchill and His Walking Cane
Most of us might think of cigars when we bring Winston Churchill to mind, but he also famously used a cane. In fact, he also claimed that he was ‘walking with destiny’.
In today’s line of canes, you can find adjustable designer canes that basically have all of the features of an adjustable folding cane, but are available in a few more color options. These are the closest to the canes that were popularized by Mr. Churchill.
Willy Wonka Used a Walking Cane?
If you ever read the classic children’s book by Roald Dahl, you’d know that the wacky chocolatier wouldn’t seem to be complete without a walking cane. If you’d like to share that same zaniness, try getting a designer cane cover for your cane to help display your unique personality.
Fred Astaire Also Used a Walking Cane at Times
This article wouldn’t be complete if we failed to give a nod to the famous Broadway dancer whose tricks with his walking cane made ‘puttin’ on the Ritz’ famous.
While you may not be able to accomplish all of the tricks that he did with a cane, whenever you do decide to relieve the boredom and learn a few cane tricks, make sure that you don’t forget to use a cane wrist strap so that you won’t drop and damage your cane.
Yoda and His Walking Cane
If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’ll know about Yoda and his walking cane. Yoda, the Jedi master, is shown walking through deserts and swamps using this tool to help him on his way.
When viewers first encounter him, he’s a few hundred years old and you’ll be able to glimpse his cane quite a few times throughout the movie series.
There’s a Walking Cane in Jurassic Park
Eagle-eyed fans may have noticed that the founder of Jurassic Park, one Mr. John Hammond, is quite recognizable for his unique amber-resin walking cane. Mr. Hammond used his cane to get around the park, however, it didn’t prevent him from getting overrun by the prehistoric creatures that were plaguing the island.
Athletes Use a Walking Cane Periodically
You may have noticed, if you’re a sports fan, that athletes from a variety of sports are now using canes to balance themselves when they’re healing from foot, ankle, knee and leg injuries.
These athletes have included such famous names as Clinton Portis, Tom Brady, DeShawn Stevenson, and even David Beckham.
Charlie Chaplin Was Famous for His Walking Cane
Anyone who’s ever seen a Charlie Chaplin film will be familiar with the iconic look he had – this included a waistcoat, a black jacket, a bowler hat, and yes, a cane. When these things were later auctioned off, the auctioneer identified the cane as a Whangee cane, and together with the iconic hat, fetched an amazing $62,500.
Nanny McPhee – Walking Cane or Stick?
Christianna Brand wrote the series of Nurse Matilda books that were the origin of Nanny McPhee. The story revolves around the nanny and her magical cane.
Nanny McPhee comes to the rescue of parents who are in dire need of a bit of discipline for their children, and is a bit of a magical human herself. She wields her powers by using her cane and as the children learn their lessons, her unsightly facial features disappear along with the ugly behaviors of the children.
It just takes a single tap of Nanny McPhee’s cane for the magic to begin, and it’s all according to her will.
Gandalf’s Walking Cane
Gandalf is a wizard straight from the pages of the Lord of the Rings. He’s always seen carrying a walking stick, or cane, which is, in reality, a magical staff that wields power according to whatever Gandalf wants it to accomplish.
When the books became films, Gandalf began as a gray wizard before he became a more powerful white wizard. He used his walking cane to fight off the Orcs, but it might be more memorable for being used in the fight between Saruman the White and Gandalf the Gray, where both of these wizards used their canes during the battle.
A walking cane can be a wonderful and unique way to show off your own personal style while you are healing from an injury or living with a disabling condition, as it has for the fictional and real people discussed above. Just be sure to find the one that fits your personal style.
