Jessica Green talks about “The Outpost”

Born in Tasmania, Australia, Jessica Green landed her first major lead as Kiki in the sci-fi series “Lightning Point.” She also played a lead in the Australian action-thriller “Red Billabong.” Later, she appeared in “Rise” and “Pirates Of Caribbean.” In 2017, she was Cleopatra in “Roman Empire” and Lexx in “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” In the fantasy adventure series “The Outpost” (now heading into its second season), Jessica is Talon, a warrior and lone survivor of a race called ‘Blackbloods.’ In this one-on-one interview, Green reveals the joys and challenges she faced in starring in this exciting series.

What did you find most challenging about being in “The Outpost”?

Jessica Green: I love all the action in this series—the stunts and fights. The choreography for the fight scenes was demanding. I almost broke my tailbone falling off a horse. I was riding, the horse went down, and it threw me off. They took x-rays. Luckily nothing was broken, but it was painful to sit for a few weeks. I also got sprained ankles and cut open my knuckles. It was full on but I loved it.

Did you audition for the role of Talon? If so what was that like?

Green: As soon as I read the script, I connected with Talon. I sent them my tape and was stoked when they gave me a callback. I’m not a fan of auditions. It’s so much harder than being on set. Auditioning is an art unto itself. You’re standing in front of a white wall with nothing. You’re pretty much using your imagination to prove you can perform a role. In the script, you read all this action—she runs, she fights, she jumps off a cliff—and you ask yourself: how am I supposed to deliver that by just standing in front of a white wall?

Are you still filming in Utah? How is it different from working in Australia?

Green: We filmed the first season in Utah, which was an interesting experience. It’s very similar to working in Australia. The crews are hard working. Filming in Serbia was quite different, though.

There are some serious fight scenes in “The Outpost,” including swordplay. Did you train for that?

Green: At the beginning, we had some weapons training. But when we got into filming, we had such a tight schedule that I had to learn some things a few minutes before filming.

What surprised you about being in this series?

Green: The CGI stuff. I hadn’t worked a lot with that. It was very interesting and surprising how those things worked.

Do you have a favorite episode or scene?

Green: All the scenes that featured our entire cast. We’re like a family. We always had the most fun when we were all together.

Was going from an Aussie accent to English easy for you?

Green: They originally wanted me to keep my Australian accent, but I said, I don’t really see an Aussie coming to the Outpost. So I kind of met them halfway and created this relaxed English accent.

Will we learn more about Talon in Season 2?

Green: Yeah, you’ll definitely learn more about Talon and some of the other characters. There’s some changes and plot twists in the storyline. If you enjoyed season one, you’ll absolutely love season two. Everyone’s character takes an unexpected turn. You’ll also learn more about Talon’s backstory and the history of the Blackbloods. So it does go into a lot more depth.

Ok. The tattoo inside your lip. When did you get it and why?

Green: (laughs) That was a crazy thing I did when I was 17.

Check out the trailer for Season 2 of “The Outpost,” which premieres Tuesday, July 10 at the newly scheduled time of 9:00 pm ET.
