Improving Your Eating Habits One Step at a Time

Let’s be honest. Trying to turn over a new leaf isn’t as easy as it sounds. This is especially true when it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, build stronger muscles, improve your athletic performance, build your self-esteem, or treat/prevent life-threatening illnesses, changing the way you eat can make a big difference. Yet, kicking old habits like eating processed foods or things high in sugar, salt, and fat is a challenge.

When you’ve been eating what and when you want for decades, changing to a healthier diet is not going to be easy. You must learn how to break old habits and overcome food addictions/cravings while incorporating better eating habits. If you try to do too much at once or go cold turkey (as people commonly try to do), often you’ll find yourself feeling overwhelmed and return to your old ways. For this reason, it is best to take small steps in the right direction until you’ve mastered each and reached your overall goal.

Start Eating at Home

Eating at a restaurant or ordering takeout seems convenient. When you live a hectic lifestyle (as most do), you have very little time and energy to prepare a meal at home. So, buying something already prepared and great-tasting seems like the easiest solution. The only problem is, this is not only an expensive practice but a bad eating habit. The foods served at fast food establishments and restaurants are filled with fat, salt, sugar, and processed foods that provide little to no nutrients and increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer.

As a first step in the right direction, you should start eating at home. At home, you’re able to control what you eat, the ingredients used, and how it’s prepared which can greatly improve your health. If a lack of time or limited energy are issues for you there are effective solutions for making eating at home a lot easier. You can order meal delivery kits. These are kits that come with recipes and pre-measured ingredients for you to enjoy. It makes cooking a lot faster and simpler to complete. Other options include prepping and planning your meals in advance.

Ditch White Flour

Refined carbs are some of the biggest culprits when it comes to conditions like obesity and diabetes. This includes foods like white bread, french fries, white rice, and white pasta. Giving all these up at once might be a bit of a struggle for you, but a good first step would be to ditch white flour when cooking at home.

There are other flours that are better for consumption than white flour. There are wheat, whole-grain, bean, and even nut flours you can use when making some of your favorite dishes. From baking bread and cakes to cooking pancakes and making pasta, simply changing this one ingredient will make your meals a lot healthier for you.

Find A Natural Sweetener

Sugar is another big factor in many life-altering conditions like obesity and diabetes. Sugar has also been proven to be just as addictive as certain street drugs. Therefore, kicking this habit can be really tough. Instead of trying to eliminate everything sweet from your diet (and going absolutely crazy in the process), you can switch to things containing natural sugar which is much better for you.

Eating more fruit can reduce your intake of refined sugar. You can add fruit to water or even tea to make it sweet. You can also look into alternative natural sweeteners like raw organic honey, agave, or stevia. Use them in your tea, coffee, or cereal, or when baking delicious goods like muffins and cookies.

Incorporate More Fruits and Veggies

Going from burgers and fries to salads and vegan meals is a hard thing for most to master at once. A great step to improve your eating habits is to simply incorporate more fruits and veggies into your diet. You can blend up your favorite fruits and have a smoothie in the morning. You can replace french fries with veggies like sweet potatoes or zucchini. You could make a veggie burger instead of having beef or turkey. You should also have large servings of veggies with your meals.

Changing your eating habits isn’t something that happens overnight for most people. Those who try to make that happen end up failing terribly and reverting back to old ways. The best way to avoid this issue is to take steps such as those described above. In mastering these steps you’ll find that it’s easier to avoid what’s bad for you and indulge in things that are healthy.
