There is a long history of musicians that have left a mark on their genre of music in the United States. Some of them we remember their names every day, others we know when we hear their songs. Our souls are better for their remarkable talents, beautiful sounds they produced, and magical words they have given us. The Tunes we hear daily help us cope with the many distractions our lives experience and help us become stronger individuals.
This is a story about Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet), an American singer and songwriter who was a major figure in our popular culture. Starting from his early years, when he showed up in New York/New Jersey to visit Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy), an American singer-songwriter, and composer who was one of the most significant figures in American Folk music, in the hospital. Guthrie, now stricken with Huntington’s disease, struggles to communicate but gains admiration for Bob when he comes to visit often. Here he meets Pete Seeger (Edward Norton), an American folk singer-songwriter, musician, and social activist. While visiting Guthrie, Bob demonstrates his musical skills to them both. Seeing what talent Dylan has, Pete invites him on his tour to sing popular existing folk songs.
While on this tour Bob meets Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), also an American singer, songwriter, musician, and activist who sings contemporary folk music about social justice. When he first meets Joan, Bob looks up to her as an amazing artist with a beautiful voice and who has much to say about the world we live in. During his experiences he meets a young man by the name of Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook), American singer-songwriter who sent us the message about our current society, government, and the hardship that many people experience. Bob begins to understand what these talented artists give to the people of this land, and it allows him to create his own words to express.
Once on the tour Bob begins to get very popular and signs a deal with Albert Grossman (Dan Fogler), manager agent, and his career takes off. His harmony becomes big amongst the folk style fans and then he advances to other genres where he becomes even bigger. During these times he tends to ride the edge and does disappoint a few promoters when he joins forces with a few band members, and they introduce his variety of rock music. Most of his friends feel that this is a mistake, but as we all know Bob became successful in many styles over his long lustrous career.
Director James Mangold displays an excellent picture of this ambitious artist and explains the upbringing of his magnificent career. James along with Timothée brings us an outstanding performance with a fantastic script for portraying this musical hero. The realistic view of Bob Dylan’s beginnings is expressed thoroughly throughout and communicates his true artistry from folk music to rock and roll and all the genres he gave us. Mangold developed a wonderful atmosphere to present the many performers that were portrayed in this reenactment of the popular folk style movement in the early sixties.
This full delivered ensemble of special musicians that played to millions during the peak of this famous type of songs is expressed wonderfully on screen. Along with the marvelous tunes, exceptional acting, and the amazing portrayal through the eyes of the director this event will win the hearts of all the viewers who re-experience the time they all lived.
Final Comment: I based my grade on the superb performance and remarkably developed historical storyline.
