From its conception in 2009 by Mojang Studios, now owned by Microsoft, and developed by Markus Persson, this game has caught the eye of almost every child gamer since its origination. It has dwarfed into many different spin offs, like Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Earth, Minecraft Dungeons, and finally Minecraft Legends. This franchise has become one of the biggest in the modern era of computer gaming. One area that has helped make this product so popular was the creation of Youtubers, that to this day promote almost every game created in the past twenty years.
In a small town in Idaho, the portal to a world beyond our wildest dreams is awaiting us all, but discovering this place requires the orb of dominance. When Steve (Jack Black) finally gets the nerve to enter the mines, he discovers a new dimension, a place where you can create, build, and invent, but you must avoid the evils that occur at night. Within this place, Steve discovers many different types of good and evil creatures. On the good side he sees the sheep, llamas, wolves, and villagers. But on the other side, he hides from the zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers (the most famous enemy of the game is distinguished by the green frowning face), piglins (human-like pig creatures found in the Nether), ghasts (balloon like figures), and the endermans (long slender silhouette with a magical aura and purple eyes).
After things go wrong for Steve, years past and his life outside the portal moves on and so do his possessions, leaving him lost in the Nether. Will Steve be lost forever? Will someone come to save him from the dangers of his new dimension? Presently, former video game grand champion and gaming store owner, Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), now has fallen on hard times. The glory days are in his rearview mirror and reality is what he now must focus on. After the death of their mother and father, Natalie (Emma Myers), the older sister and new family provider, and her younger brother Henry (Sebastian Hansen), now have to adapt to relocating when Natalie gets a job at the local factory. Finally, Dawn (Danielle Brooks), actually a jack of all trades, is currently a local realtor and traveling zoo operator, who loves all kinds of animals.
Trying to stay in line with the best-selling video game of all time, director Jared Hess has much to live up to. He does have difficulty keeping the majority of the tale aligned to the game premise and spins off into different directions that just did not totally make sense. When Jared added Vice Principal Marlene (Jennifer Coolidge), he created a lost character that did not fit within the storyline. However, truly understanding the need to create a character, when you get an excellent star totally makes sense. On the other hand, finding another role within the realm might have been the right choice. Hess did do some good when he included some references to two YouTubers Valkyrae and DanTDM giving them some sort of cameo appearance in the motion picture. The performance by the cast was outstanding, especially from Jack, Jason, and Jennifer.
This fun experience is worth seeing, but if you are a true Minecraft fan you may find some things along the way that could disappoint. Still a good film, especially for all ages, and you will definitely have an enjoyable time for sure.
Final Comment: I based my grade on a sensational recreation of this most popular video game, the amusing performance from the cast, and an entertaining script.
