‘You Gotta Believe’ A Soulful Tour of Love

When a bunch of determined boys who struggled through the regular season are picked to represent Westview in the 2002 Little League World Series playoffs. The coach has to figure out a way to help this team go from last place to compete against the tough opponents they have ahead of them. This journey will take a group of poorly coached kids on an adventure that will present miracles to all those who follow them to their destinies.

Coach Jon Kelly (Greg Kinnear) is a lawyer at a local Westview firm, who has been for many years busting his butt trying to make a partner at the firm. Because of his tireless efforts at the firm his focus on the little league team has not been up to par. One of his assistant coaches, Bobby Ratliff (Luke Wilson), has been doing what he can to help the boys. Being lifelong friends with Jon, and having a son, Robert Ratliff (Michael Cash), on the team, Bobby feels obligated to help as much as he can. But still the team struggles, and the coaches’ oversight of the players finds that the best talent is not being used to its potential. While coach Kelly, who also has a son on the team, Walker Kelly (Etienne Kellici), seems to not notice the true problems that exist.

There must have been a little magic in the air when an opportunity arose from an offer made by the league commissioner Kliff Young (Patrick Renna) to Coach Kelly that would allow his team to participate in the Little League playoffs representing Westview, Texas. Jon begins to struggle with the idea that an underdeveloped team will play against the toughest teams in Texas not to mention what they will face if they win. It finally takes convincing from his friend assistant coach Bobby, his wife Kathy Kelly (Molly Parker), and Bobby’s wife Patti Ratliff (Sarah Gadon) to convince him to accept the offer and allow the boys to take a journey on an experience they will never forget.

The voyage begins with a team that consists of Walker, Robert, Jack Huckabay (Jacob Soley), Scooter Finley (Nicholas Fry), Michell Belew (Gavin Maciver-Wright), Robby Lebus (Josh Reich), Mark Grace (Scott Mackenzie), Mikey Valdez (Jacob Mazeral), Rand Ravnaas (Davide Fair), Peter Kite (Zachary Morton), Chris Rivera (Seth Murchison), and Patton Eagle (Evan Hasler). This group of kids puts together a drive that includes a passion for the love of baseball that brings them all the way to Williamsport, Pennsylvania and to take on some of the best teams in the country.

Director Ty Roberts does an excellent job recreating a true story about the little league team from Westview Texas in 2002. He develops this real-life tale remarkably well and brings it on the silver screen for all of us to enjoy. Roberts also put together a fantastic cast to reenact this beautiful story and allow us all to relive what they went through on this remarkable journey. This heartwarming voyage fills us all with pride and joy as you see these amazing characters enter on this long expedition that will truly win over your heart.

Final Comment: I based my grade on how well this narrative was retold and the special performance from the actors.
