This is a period piece reflecting on the people and soldiers of the Appalachian Mountains after the end of World War 2. Relationships were strong for the people that worked the land, they depended on each other’s trade to survive. After the war things changed for many, the men returned with issues relating to the violent things they experienced. Sometimes there were secrets kept among the people from the hills, but during this time it was best they all remained quiet.
When the townsfolk heroes came back from overseas, everyone was overjoyed by their return, but as time would tell the effects of battle wore down individuals tremendously. Teddy Henry (Colin Henning) came home to his beloved Marion (Georgia Morgan), while Andrew Wills’s (Aaron J. Stewart) homecoming was somewhat earlier for his wife, Cate (Brooke Elizabeth). Previous friendships and jobs performed by the women had to change to allow for the soldiers to return to their previous careers. What this little town didn’t know is that new understandings were out there for all to realize.
These experiences strayed for our characters. Marion had a close relationship with Peggie Darrow (Hayleigh Hart Franklin) and was worried about losing her husband Teddy to her neighbor Cate. When her husband returned Cate found that Andrew had become sickly and showed less and less interest in their marriage. When Teddy and Marion started realizing that he could not sow like he did before, because of trauma, she began to fake his abilities and Teddy found that Cate was lonely and needed his help making him feel special. Jealousy arose, allowing for many new discoveries that were waiting to be revealed, slowly beginning to appear for everyone to see.
Attempting to do it all, director, writer, and actor Colin Henning presents an interesting tale that tries to display today’s society in a time where this behavior was forbidden. Colin seems to be trying to express something within this narrative that’s about love and relationships during a tough and trying period when a society is rebuilding from the difficulties of combat. Hennings in reality presents a very slow storyline with many plot twists filled with jealousy, vicarious desires, and hidden relationships that build up tension between all of the characters, but eventually leading to nowhere. The performances from the cast are outstanding and do demonstrate believable emotions of each person.
Even with a fantastic execution from the performers, it wasn’t enough to give this film a good rating. Too many intertwined relationships crossing almost every boundary just didn’t fit the time period that the director was trying to depict and made it hard to keep interest in what was really going on.
Final Comment: I based my grade on a lost story with the marvelous implementation from the talent.
Stars 2.5 out of 5
