The war in Korea has been over for seventy years, but we still have the country divided into north and south regions. There is an area that is shared by both, called the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), it is a heavily militarized strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula near the 38th parallel. This area is heavily guarded by both sides, preventing anyone from illegally crossing into each other’s country. If any issues were to occur in this area, all-out war could occur.
When the United States military is charged to bring a team into the DMZ from South Korea to repair a sensor canister for the US and South Korean national security, Edward Brockman (Chase Stokes), American military computer data analyst, is asked to cover for another soldier. When things go wrong and their chopper is shot down on the North Korean side, they must find a way to escape back to freedom or risk capture that will lead to certain death. Traveling with a small team of military soldiers and an analyst that consists of Selby (Lana Condor), Wilson Lee (Daniel Jun), Chris Lebold (Callan Mulvey), lieutenant Jonah Ross (Jonathan Whitesell), and Josh Weaver (Desmin Borges), non-military computer specialist.
Finding themselves in lots of danger they must find a way to get back to the south without being discovered by the North Korean military. Running into many different life-threatening distractions, while searching for the clear path to freedom, it seems almost bleak for the possible safe return home.
Director and writer Steve Barnett presents a well delivered story of realistic portions but does tend to miss a couple of passionate scenes that could have been developed better. Leaving out these details takes away from the emotional aspect of the film, especially when you had plenty of time to present this content. Beyond that the performance by the cast was outstanding and the special effects were on point, giving you a tremendous presentation of their involvement.
All in all, this is a great cinematic picture worth watching, especially if you like war type motion pictures. The details are on the money and the encounters are fantastic. The storyline brings you through their experience and delivers you to the freedom they strive to obtain.
Final Comment: I based my grade on the wonderful wartime narrative and the spectacular execution from the performers.
