The 80’s in America was a time when the country felt everything was in control, but in reality, it was beginning to fester with brutality from within. Racism was still evident as well as antisemitism, especially in the California bay area. The youth was in the midst of expressing their feelings toward the older generation and their mistakes from the past. Time will tell, but things were about to explode with a powder keg of violence ready to burst somewhere on the streets of Oakland.
These events all take place during the NBA conference semifinals between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers. Each character played a part that eventually leads to the exciting inevitable conclusion. During an interesting time where this part of the world was struggling with their identity, these interesting individuals play out their roles that eventually build into an outstanding ending. All having unrelated parts these personalities, Clint (Pedro Pascal), former debt collector goon, Sleepy Floyd (Jay Ellis), NBA basketball player for the Golden State Warriors, The Guy (Ben Mendelsohn), Local Oakland Police Detective, Entice (Normani) and Barbie (Dominique Thorne), local female rappers trying to get a break, Tina (Ji-young Yoo), Lucid (Jack Champion), Josh (Keir Gilchrist), and Kohlrabi (Marteen) local punk rockers, Troy (Dan Marotte) and Travis (Angus Cloud), Neo-Nazi’s extremists, and finally, Hank (Tom Hanks), Video Store Owner. These personalities all meet up for an all-out battle that will once and for all end the hatred that runs rampant in the streets of the bay area.
Director and writer Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden develop an excellent revenge style motion picture that allows for the discriminated to mock their retaliation against their oppressors. Ryan and Anna did a fantastic job blending in the four different scenarios to build up the tension between each character and playout to the eventual conclusion. Including outstanding special effects that gushes out at you, Fleck and Boden brought to you a Tarantino style film that is sure to be a success. Reminiscing in the domain of the late eighties brings back a way of life that was hidden behind the glamour of that time period. Also managing to include a cameo appearance of superstar NBA player Sleepy Floyd and American rapper Too Short (Cop and narrator). The performance from the cast was spectacular and made the journey through this reality believable. Especially from the accomplishments created by Pascal, Mendelsohn, and the rest of the crew.
This marvelous quest through a past timeline shows us how evil can dwindle and fester, allowing for the meek when prompted to fight back with a vengeance. Truly a tremendous example of the bad parts of human nature, even though it is for their good, it brings out consequences that eventually end in a gory death.
Final Comment: I based my grade on the magnificent narrative with an exceptional presentation from the performers and finally, including the right effects to pull off a successful result.
